I could hear plates being moved, glasses touching, and the low, comfortable chatter of people who had been sitting around a table for a long time. The smell reached me next—roasted meat, butter, herbs, warm bread, and something sweet baking with cinnamon.

It should have felt welcoming.

Instead, I stopped with my hand still on the doorknob.

My daughter was eleven. She was usually the first person to hear my key in the lock. On evenings like this, she would come running, asking whether I had brought anything home, complaining about homework, or simply throwing her arms around my waist before remembering that she was supposedly too old for that.

That night, there was no sound from her.

I stepped inside and quietly shut the door.

“Hello?” I called.

Nobody answered.

The laughter from the dining room continued.

I loosened my tie and walked farther into the house. A pair of expensive shoes sat beside the entry bench. Several unfamiliar coats hung from the rack. Someone had arranged flowers in the hallway, and candlelight flickered against the framed photographs on the wall.

We were having guests.

Nobody had told me.

That bothered me, but not nearly as much as the silence coming from the kitchen.

I followed the sound of conversation toward the dining room and stopped just before the doorway.

My wife was seated at the head of the table.

Her parents were there. Two of her sisters sat beside them, along with their husbands. Plates covered nearly every inch of the polished table. There was roast chicken, vegetables, potatoes, salad, fresh bread, and several dishes I could not immediately identify.

Everyone looked comfortable.

Everyone except the chair at the far end.

My daughter's chair.

It was empty.

My wife glanced up.

“Oh. You're home.”

She said it casually, as if I had arrived at an ordinary dinner rather than walked into a gathering I had never heard about.

“Apparently,” I said.

Her smile tightened.

“We decided to have dinner together.”

I looked around the table.

“Where's Emma?”

There was a pause.

It lasted barely two seconds, but I noticed it.

My mother-in-law reached for her wineglass.

“She wasn't feeling very social.”

My wife's sister laughed softly.

“You know how children are.”

I didn't laugh.

“Where is she?”

My wife put down her fork.

“She had something earlier.”

“What does that mean?”

“She wasn't hungry.”

I stared at her.

My daughter could be picky, but she was not the kind of child who turned down a family dinner without a reason. And if she genuinely had no appetite, she would usually come downstairs anyway and sit beside me.

Something had already gone wrong.

I walked away before anyone could stop me.

The kitchen lights were off.

At first, I could see nothing.

Then I noticed a small figure sitting on the floor beside the lower cabinets.

Emma.

She had her knees pulled close to her chest and a plastic cup of instant noodles balanced between both hands. The steam had almost disappeared.
