She doesn&#39;t need to impress anyone at dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>I stood again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going to make her a real meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My wife pushed back her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t turn this into something bigger than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBigger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was sitting alone in the dark eating noodles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe chose to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved away.<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment I knew there was more.<\/p>\n<p>I walked into the kitchen and turned on every light.<\/p>\n<p>The brightness exposed details I had missed earlier.<\/p>\n<p>There was a plate sitting in the sink.<\/p>\n<p>It had food on it.<\/p>\n<p>Not much, but enough to recognize that someone had prepared a serving for Emma and then taken it away.<\/p>\n<p>Beside the sink was a folded napkin.<\/p>\n<p>On the counter sat a half-empty bottle of water.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the plate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My wife appeared behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has food on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t eat it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned the plate over.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath it was a small handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting belonged to my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>She had written: \u201cI&#39;m sorry. I didn&#39;t mean to cause trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at my wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe probably felt guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My wife didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the note on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did she get this idea that eating dinner is causing trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re overreacting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to unsettle her more than shouting would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am asking a simple question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou work all day. situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, my mother-in-law entered the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis conversation is unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt isn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma needs discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my jaw looked at my wife.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t correct her mother.<\/p>\n<p>That silence was an answer.<\/p>\n<p>I went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Emma was sitting on her bed with her homework open in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing left out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her sleeve between her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma doesn&#39;t like when I sit with everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says I make things uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I made it unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the drawer beside her bed.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small notebook.<\/p>\n<p>She handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings I shouldn&#39;t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The first page contained a child&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t ask why Grandma doesn&#39;t like me.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t ask why Mom gets angry when Dad comes home.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t ask why everyone gets food except me.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t tell Dad when they say I am spoiled.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t cry at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t make Dad fight with Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter watched my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you to write these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The house suddenly seemed much larger.<\/p>\n<p>And much less safe.<\/p>\n<p>I stood with the notebook in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma, I need you to tell me one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there anything else you&#39;ve been keeping from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she reached under her pillow.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled out a folded envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom told me never to show you
