The refrigerator hummed downstairs. Pipes clicked somewhere behind the wall. Outside, a motorcycle passed on the road and disappeared into the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered everything.<\/p>\n<p>The dark kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The noodles.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The school report.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter&#39;s frightened voice saying that she had been afraid to tell me because she thought her mother would lose the house.<\/p>\n<p>I got out of bed.<\/p>\n<p>Emma&#39;s bedroom door was slightly open.<\/p>\n<p>She was already awake.<\/p>\n<p>She sat cross-legged on the floor beside her bed, arranging pencils by color. It was something she had done since she was little whenever she was nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMorning,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMorning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady for breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Mom coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was something about the way she said it that made me realize how often she had learned to prepare herself for disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>We went downstairs together.<\/p>\n<p>My wife was already in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>She looked as though she hadn&#39;t slept at all.<\/p>\n<p>There were dark circles beneath her eyes. Her hair was pulled back carelessly, and she was standing beside the stove without actually cooking anything.<\/p>\n<p>When she saw Emma, she stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cMorning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the shelves again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEggs it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I started cooking.<\/p>\n<p>My wife remained near the counter.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, the only sounds were the crack of eggshells, the hiss of butter in the pan, and the scrape of a spatula.<\/p>\n<p>Then my wife said, \u201cI want to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked down.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>My wife continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should never have made you feel like you were the reason adults were fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma&#39;s fingers tightened around the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t trying to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My daughter finally looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me not to tell Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My wife swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said he&#39;d leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words were quiet.<\/p>\n<p>My wife closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the eggs onto three plates.<\/p>\n<p>We sat at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody ate for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emma picked up her fork.<\/p>\n<p>She took one bite.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>My wife watched her.<\/p>\n<p>I watched both of them.<\/p>\n<p>There was no dramatic reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>No sudden embrace.<\/p>\n<p>No magical sentence that could erase a year.<\/p>\n<p>There was only breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>And for my daughter, that ordinary meal seemed strangely important.<\/p>\n<p>After she finished, she asked, \u201cCan I go to school?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want everyone asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My wife looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I knew exactly what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>The school counselor had already been involved.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers had noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Other children might have noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll talk to the counselor,\u201d I said. \u201cYou don&#39;t have to explain anything to anyone you don&#39;t trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need my bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she left the kitchen, my wife whispered, \u201cShe&#39;s different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had to become different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My wife looked at the empty plate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s something else we need to discuss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can show you everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need everything. Not just what you remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her hands together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother asked for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had debts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I didn&#39;t tell you because I thought you&#39;d say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you used money from our account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped keeping track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer worried me more than an exact amount would have.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;ll find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still love me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question caught me off guard.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut love doesn&#39;t make this okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At school, Emma held my hand until we reached the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Grandma asks where I am, don&#39;t tell her everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I crouched beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she&#39;ll say I caused all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the school doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked inside.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed there until she disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Then I drove to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>My wife&#39;s account records were not difficult to obtain because they were joint household funds.
