By coincidence, a large commercial job had canceled overnight, leaving several trucks available.

I asked whether they could send a crew immediately.

They could.

Maya arrived at nine with a paralegal.

Before a single box was moved, we filmed the house from the front door to the smallest closet.

Maya insisted on documenting everything.

Not just my possessions.

Everything.

“This protects you from accusations later,” she explained.

I nodded.

We divided the contents into three categories.

Mine.

His.

Contested.

Anything uncertain stayed where it was.

My grandmother's dining set was mine.

The paintings I had purchased before marriage were mine.

The Persian rugs from my previous home were mine.

My first editions were mine.

The jewelry I had purchased from the proceeds of my company was mine.

My photographs, clothing, kitchen equipment, and office equipment were mine.

Carter's suits stayed.

His golf clubs stayed.

His gaming system stayed.

His enormous television stayed.

The charcoal sectional he had selected stayed.

The barstools he had insisted on buying stayed.

The built-in appliances remained because they were part of the property.

There would be no petty destruction.

No revenge.

Only documentation.

As the movers carried boxes through the foyer, I found myself staring at one framed photograph.

It showed me at twenty-five, sitting in my first office.

The room was tiny.

The carpet was stained.

A portable fan sat on the floor because the air-conditioning barely worked.

Behind me was a cracked wall.

I had written something on the back of the frame years ago.

One day, this will be worth it.

I carried that photograph outside myself.

At 11:45, two trucks were loaded.

My phone buzzed.

Carter.

Just landed. We're getting the bags. Have lunch ready.

I sent a screenshot to Maya.

Ten minutes later, another message appeared.

Mom is expecting wine.
