He took calls outside. He stopped leaving financial papers on the kitchen counter. When I asked about a commercial property he had mentioned buying, he changed the subject.

Once, I asked whether we were doing all right financially.

He laughed.

“We're fine.”

The answer had been too quick.

At the time, I let it go.

Now I wondered why.

Miriam handed me a stack of donation receipts.

“Since you're here, help me sort these.”

“You're exploiting me.”

“Obviously.”

For the next hour, we worked side by side.

The ordinary task steadied me.

Families had donated blankets, groceries, toys, and small amounts of money. Some notes were handwritten. Others were printed automatically.

One envelope contained a hundred-dollar donation from an anonymous donor.

Another contained twenty dollars and a child's drawing of a snowman.

I smiled at that one.

Then I saw my own name.

“That's strange.”

Miriam looked over.

“What?”

“My frowned.

“How much?”

“Two hundred.”

I shook my head.

“I didn't.”

She looked at the receipt again.

“Maybe David did?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Something about the transaction bothered me.

It wasn't the amount.

It was the fact that my name had been used without my knowledge.

Miriam put the receipt aside.

“Could be a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

I didn't know then how important that little piece of paper would become.

A few minutes later, a local television crew arrived.

They had been scheduled to film a short Christmas segment about Safe Harbor's holiday meal program.

Miriam immediately pointed at me.

“No.”

The reporter laughed.

“Why not?”

“She doesn't work here.”

“Neither do half the people we interview.”

“I came here to hide.”

The reporter was showing another child the paper crown he had made.

I watched Miriam kneel beside them.

Something in me softened.

“Five minutes,” I said.

The reporter asked about the shelter.

I spoke about the volunteers.

About families who needed a warm meal.

About how holidays could be difficult when people had nowhere safe to go.

I did not mention David.

I did not mention Sarah.

I did not mention my marriage.

Then the reporter asked why I had chosen to spend Christmas Eve there.

I hesitated.

“Because sometimes the place you expect to belong isn't where you need to be that night.”

The reporter looked at me for a moment.

“That sounds personal.”

“It is.”

She did not push.

The camera stayed on me for another few seconds.

Then they moved on.

I forgot about the interview almost immediately.

By eleven, Miriam had convinced me to eat.

We sat at a small table near the kitchen.

“You okay?” she asked.

“No.”

“Good.”

I laughed.

“That is a terrible response.”

“It means you're not lying to yourself.”

I looked down at my plate.

“I think David has been hiding something.”

“Money?”

“I don't know.”

“What makes you think that?”

“Nothing I can prove.”

“Then don't accuse him.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“Good.”

My phone vibrated.

A message from David.

Are you staying at Miriam's?

I stared at it.

I hadn't told him.

I typed back.

Why?

His response came quickly.

Just answer me.

I turned the phone toward Miriam.

She read the message.

“Don't tell him.”

“I already think he knows.”

“How?”

“Because he asked.”

I put the phone face down.

At 11:48, another message arrived.

Please come home tomorrow morning.

I read it twice.

It was the first time he had asked me to return.

I wondered what had changed.

Then the television in the shelter's common room showed a replay of the evening news.

The Christmas segment appeared.

There I was.

Standing inside Safe Harbor.

Talking about families who needed somewhere to belong.

My phone began vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Then continuously.

David was calling.

I watched his name flash across the screen.

I didn't answer.

Miriam looked at me.

“You should probably find out why he's panicking.”

“I don't want to.”

“Then don't.”

The call stopped.

A text appeared.

Claire, why are you on television?

I stared at those words.

He sounded shocked.

But I had done nothing wrong.

I had gone somewhere safe.

I had helped Miriam.

I had spoken to a reporter for five minutes.

Yet David's reaction felt less like embarrassment and more like fear.

That was the first moment I understood something important.

He had not simply wanted me out of the house because Sarah was coming.

He had wanted to control where I went.

And now, for the first time that evening, I wondered why.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: David’s Midnight Call Wasn’t About Christmas at All, and the First
