Don&#39;t try to confront David. Don&#39;t try to recover documents yourself. Don&#39;t go back to the house tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need my things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can get them later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if he destroys everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s why we preserve what you already have and document what the children found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Miriam.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not sign anything. Do not agree to any settlement. Do not respond emotionally to his messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, has your father ever placed the house into a trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question caught me off guard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have the documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have access to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered my father&#39;s handwriting on the folder.<\/p>\n<p>He had insisted on putting the property into a trust years before I met David.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had thought it was unnecessarily complicated.<\/p>\n<p>My father had disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>He used to say that love did not eliminate the need for paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>I had laughed at him.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wished I hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica asked me to locate the trust documents but not remove anything from the safe.<\/p>\n<p>I did exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>The paperwork showed that the house had restrictions on transfer and borrowing.<\/p>\n<p>The property could not simply be reassigned because I signed a sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>There were requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Independent approval.<\/p>\n<p>Notarized documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Trustee authorization.<\/p>\n<p>The forged document suddenly looked less frightening.<\/p>\n<p>But it raised a more disturbing question.<\/p>\n<p>Why would David forge it?<\/p>\n<p>Jessica seemed to read the silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, there is something else you need to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone is trying to establish that you voluntarily transferred property, they may be preparing for a larger transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoan. Sale. Refinance. Debt restructuring. We can&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would my husband need my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica didn&#39;t answer directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what we need to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, December 26, Jessica met me.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing she did was compare the bank records with the documents David had apparently shown Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>They were not the same.<\/p>\n<p>The genuine account records showed four transfers to Oak Creek Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>The printed statements shown to Sarah suggested the money had gone somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>The documents were not simply misleading.<\/p>\n<p>They had been manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica leaned back in her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was designed to look believable to someone who didn&#39;t know what to verify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>About Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>About Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>About myself.<\/p>\n<p>It would have worked if I had not gone to Safe Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>If the news crew had not shown up.<\/p>\n<p>If Sarah had never spoken to me directly.<\/p>\n<p>If Chloe had not looked inside the drawer.<\/p>\n<p>If Miriam had not checked the donation records.<\/p>\n<p>One missing question could have allowed the entire story to stand.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica tapped the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#39;t yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour signatures from the trust documents don&#39;t match this one.
