Possibly property transfer. Possibly debt protection.”

“Debt protection from whom?”

She pointed toward Oak Creek.

“From whoever might eventually come looking for its assets.”

The room became quiet.

I thought about the strange phone calls.

The locked office.

The sudden interest in my spending.

The accounts I had never seen.

The investment property David had supposedly been considering.

I had mistaken secrecy for stress.

Maybe it had been preparation.

The next photograph showed something that made Jessica sit forward.

A spreadsheet.

At the top was a figure.

$318,000.

Below it were several liabilities.

Credit lines.

Private loans.

A commercial note.

A line labeled “urgent.”

I swallowed.

“Is that what he owes?”

“Not necessarily,” Jessica said. “We need the underlying documents.”

“But Oak Creek is receiving my money.”

“Yes.”

“And he owns Oak Creek.”

“According to the records.”

I looked at the page again.

One column contained dates.

The first transfer from our savings had occurred in November.

The last one had happened only days before Christmas.

David had been moving our money into his company while telling me I was irresponsible with money.

The deception suddenly looked much larger than I had imagined.

Then Chloe sent another photograph.

This one was different.

It showed an envelope.

On the front, handwritten in David's writing, were the words “Sarah — Christmas.”

Inside was a letter.

Sarah had apparently photographed it before anyone could remove it.

The letter claimed that David had been trying to protect the children from me.

It described me as controlling.

It said I had supposedly demanded that Sarah stay away.

It also claimed I had been taking money from the family accounts.

But at the bottom was a sentence that changed everything.

“If Claire leaves willingly, the children will believe she abandoned them.”

I read it again.

Then again.

He wasn't only trying to remove me from the house.

He wanted the children to believe I had chosen to leave them.

That was why he had needed Christmas.

He wanted witnesses.

A perfect story.

The stepmother walked out during the holidays.

The biological mother returned.

The children were reunited.

And David could tell everyone that the marriage had simply collapsed.

Sarah called while I was still staring at the letter.

“I read it,” she said.

“I know.”

“I didn't believe him.”

“You didn't know what to believe.”

“I should have called you months ago.”

“Maybe.”

She sighed.

“I owe you an apology.”

“You can give me one later.”

“Claire.”

“I mean it.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I don't know yet.”

That was the truth.

I knew what I could not do.

I could not walk into that house alone.

I could not confront David.

I could not let anger decide what happened next.

But I also knew I could not pretend this was a marriage disagreement.

Sarah told me something else.

“Ethan found a storage box.”

“What kind?”

“Old financial files.”

“Where?”

“In the garage.”

“What's inside?”

“He says there are invoices from Oak Creek.”

I looked at Jessica.

“Can he photograph them?”

“Yes,” Jessica said immediately. “But tell him not to remove anything.”

I relayed the message.

Twenty minutes later, Ethan sent photographs.

The invoices were for consulting services.

Oak Creek had paid several companies.

One was unfamiliar.

Another belonged to a man whose name appeared on the list from David's folder.

Jessica enlarged the image.

“That's not a consultant.”

“What is he?”

“Notary.”

I stared at her.

“The same notary?”

She nodded.

“The one listed in the exit strategy.”

The room went silent.

Suddenly the forged property document made more sense.

David had not created it alone.

At least, that was what the evidence suggested.

There had been preparation.

There had been money.

There had been a sequence.

And there had been people assigned to different parts of it.

I asked Jessica whether we should go to the police.

She said we needed to preserve the evidence first.

“If you move too quickly without documenting the chain, you give them an opportunity to claim the documents were altered.”

“So what do we do?”

“We build the timeline.”

She took out a notebook.

October 14.

The first planning document.

October.

David begins telling Sarah the marriage is failing.

November.

First transfer to Oak Creek.

December.

Additional transfers.

Christmas Eve.

I leave the house.

Christmas night.

News interview.

December 26.

The folder discovered.

The timeline was becoming impossible to ignore.

Then Jessica noticed something.

“Wait.”

She pointed at the spreadsheet.

“What?”

“Look at this account number.”

I leaned closer.

It wasn't our joint savings account.

It was my personal account.

I felt a sudden wave of cold.

“How did he get access to that?”

Jessica looked at me.

“That is the question.”

I knew my password.

David had never known it.

At least, I thought he hadn't.

Then I remembered something.

Two years earlier, after my laptop broke, David had helped me restore my banking application.

He had sat beside me.

He had watched me log in.

At the time, I hadn't thought twice about it.

Now the memory felt different.

My phone vibrated.

Chloe again.

“Dad is looking for the blue folder.”

I looked at Jessica.

She didn't hesitate.

“Tell her to leave the house.”

I typed the message.

Before Chloe could answer, another photograph arrived.

The final page of the folder.

At the bottom, beneath a list of tasks, was one sentence.

“Once transfer is complete, Claire has no reason to return.”

I stared at those words.

Then I looked at the date written above them.

December 27.

Tomorrow.
