accountant before breakfast.

He didn't answer.

I called again.

Still nothing.

Jessica told me not to leave a voicemail describing the documents.

So I simply asked him to call me.

At 8:17, he did.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Jessica told me you had questions.”

“Your signature appears on a property document.”

There was a long silence.

“Which document?”

I gave him the date.

His breathing changed.

“I need to explain something.”

“Please do.”

“I thought it was legitimate.”

“What did you sign?”

“A financial certification.”

“For Oak Creek?”

“Yes.”

“Did you certify that I transferred the house?”

“No.”

“Then what did you certify?”

“That the funds transferred into Oak Creek came from a legitimate source.”

My stomach tightened.

“What source?”

“Our family account.”

“But those funds were mine.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew then?”

“No.”

He sounded exhausted.

“David gave me documents showing that you had authorized the transfers.”

“Did you see my signature?”

“Yes.”

“Was it real?”

“I believed it was.”

“Did you verify with me?”

“No.”

That answer hurt.

Not because he had betrayed me intentionally.

Because the entire plan depended on people accepting paperwork without asking me.

“Why did David need your certification?”

“I don't know.”

“Try.”

He was silent.

Then he said, “The lender required evidence that the funds being moved into Oak Creek were not disputed.”

I closed my eyes.

So that was another piece.

David needed the money inside Oak Creek before the property transaction.

The money strengthened his company.

The property secured the debt.

And my supposed consent made everything appear legitimate.

“Did you receive payment?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Five thousand dollars.”

Jessica's expression changed when I told her.

“Did you know what the money was for?”

“No.”

“Do you still have the documents?”

“Yes.”

“Don't alter anything.”

“I won't.”

“Can you send copies?”

“I can.”

Within an hour, we had them.

The accountant's documents included a financial summary.

There was something else in the file.

A note from David.

It said:

“Once Claire signs, all outstanding objections disappear.”

I stared at the sentence.

I hadn't signed.

Yet David had already written as though I had.

Then we found the most important document.

A draft agreement between Oak Creek and the lender.

The collateral was our house.

The borrower was Oak Creek.

The guarantor was David.

And beneath the guarantor section was a statement declaring that I had no remaining financial interest in the property.

That statement was false.

Jessica looked at me.

“This is enough to show intent.”

“Enough for what?”

“To explain why he needed the transfer.”

The investigator was notified.

The documents were preserved.

But I still couldn't understand one thing.

Why had David thought I would simply leave?

Then I remembered what he had said on Christmas Eve.

It'll be easier if you aren't here.

At the time, I thought he meant easier emotionally.

Now I understood.

My presence was a problem.

My signature was a problem.

My questions were a problem.

My knowledge of the property was a problem.

He needed me away long enough to finish the paperwork.

Sarah arrived that afternoon.

She looked different from the woman I remembered.

Less guarded.

More ashamed.

“I owe you the truth,” she said.

“You've already told me a lot.”

“Not everything.”

She sat across from me.

“When David contacted me in October, he said you were trying to destroy the family.”

“I know.”

“He told me you had become obsessed with money.”

I said nothing.

“He also said you wanted him to choose between you and the children.”

“That never happened.”

“I believe you.”

She looked down.

“I was angry at you.”

“I know.”

“But then I talked to Chloe.”

She smiled sadly.

“She defended you.”

That didn't surprise me.

“She told me you were the one who remembered her grandmother's birthday.”

I smiled despite myself.

Sarah continued.

“She said you never tried to be her mother.”

My eyes filled.

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

She reached across the table.

“I am sorry I believed him.”

I took her hand.

“We both believed different versions of him.”

Neither of us said anything for a while.

Then Sarah asked, “What happens now?”

“I don't know.”

She looked toward Jessica.

“What about the children?”

“They need the truth,” Jessica said, “but not every adult detail.”

I agreed.

That evening, Ethan and Chloe asked to speak with me.

We sat together in Miriam's office.

Ethan looked older than he had two days earlier.

“Is Dad in trouble?”

I answered carefully.

“Some financial matters are being investigated.”

“Did he steal from you?”

“I don't want you to decide that based on what I say.”

Chloe looked at me.

“Did he lie?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“About me?”

“No.”

“About Mom?”

“Yes.”

“About you?”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked down.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

That was the hardest answer.

Children want motives.

Adults want explanations.

Sometimes all you have is evidence.

Then Chloe said something that made me realize how deeply David's plan had affected them.

“He told us you wanted to leave.”

I closed my eyes.

“I never said that.”

“I know.”

She began crying.

“I thought you were leaving because you didn't love us.”

I moved closer.

“I never left you.”

“But you left the house.”

“Your father asked me to.”

“Because Mom came?”

“Yes.”

She wiped her face.

“I'm sorry.”

“You don't have to apologize.”

“I believed him.”

“You were supposed to trust your father.”

Ethan spoke quietly.

“Maybe we weren't.”

I looked at him.

“Don't make that decision tonight.”

He nodded.

Later, Jessica received a message from the investigator.

There had been activity on one of the Oak Creek accounts.

A large payment had been attempted.

The recipient was the same notary whose name appeared in David's exit strategy.

The payment was blocked.

But the attempted transaction revealed something else.

A note attached to the transfer.

“Final preparation.”

The date was that night.

Jessica immediately contacted the investigator.

I looked at the message.

David was still moving pieces.

Even after the property filing had been challenged.

Even after the documents had been discovered.

He was still trying to finish something.

“What could he be preparing?” I asked.

Jessica looked at me.

“I think we need to find out before he knows we've seen it.”

That night, the investigator located David.

He was at a hotel across town.

Alone.

His laptop was with him.

And according to the preliminary report, he had just booked a flight.

Not for himself.

For another person.

Sarah's face went pale when she saw the name.

It belonged to the notary.
