Ten minutes earlier, she had been crying so hard that she could barely speak. Now she was completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweetheart,\u201d I said, touching her hair, \u201ctell me where it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Not at the nurse. Not at the doctor standing behind the curtain. Me.<\/p>\n<p>Then her eyes moved toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Her lips barely opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows why it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned. \u201cWho knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, a nurse stepped into the room carrying a blood-pressure cuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Carter, we need to get her vitals again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My daughter grabbed my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was so quiet I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t let him come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>There was no one there.<\/p>\n<p>Yet my daughter kept staring at the empty opening as though she could see someone standing on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>My name is Claire Bennett. I was thirty-eight years old that winter, and until that night, I believed I knew almost everything important about my twelve-year-old daughter, Emily.<\/p>\n<p>I knew she hated tomatoes but loved tomato soup.<\/p>\n<p>I knew she slept with one foot outside the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>I knew she hummed when she was nervous.<\/p>\n<p>I knew she could remember entire conversations after hearing them once.<\/p>\n<p>And I knew that when Emily was frightened, she usually reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>That night, she did something different.<\/p>\n<p>She tried to hide.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency department was crowded. Phones rang at the central desk. Rubber wheels squeaked across the polished floor. Somewhere behind the curtain, a monitor beeped at steady intervals while a child cried for his father.<\/p>\n<p>The smell of antiseptic hung in the air.<\/p>\n<p>Emily sat motionless while the nurse wrapped the cuff around her arm.<\/p>\n<p>Her blood pressure was low.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse glanced at the monitor, then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long has she been experiencing the pain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince this afternoon,\u201d I said. \u201cBut it became severe about an hour ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny fever?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVomiting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she fall? Get hit? Eat anything unusual?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse nodded and wrote something on the chart.<\/p>\n<p>Emily watched her.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don&#39;t tell them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell them what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill move through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you afraid I\u2019ll tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know how to explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could ask another question, the curtain opened.<\/p>\n<p>A doctor entered.<\/p>\n<p>He was perhaps in his late forties, with gray beginning at his temples and a hospital badge clipped to his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Her entire body stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>It was subtle. So subtle that another parent might have missed it.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m Dr. Harris,\u201d he said gently. \u201cI&#39;m going to ask you a few questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled a stool beside the bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you point to where it hurts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes the pain stay there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it move?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you felt this before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor studied her face for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s okay. We don&#39;t have to rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He examined her abdomen carefully, asking her to tell him whenever something hurt more.<\/p>\n<p>The moment his fingers reached one particular area, Emily flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He pressed again.<\/p>\n<p>Emily gasped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He immediately removed his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing became shallow.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>She squeezed them.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want some blood work and imaging. Given the location and severity, we need to rule out several things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it serious?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may not be. But pain this intense deserves an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped toward the curtain.<\/p>\n<p>Emily suddenly spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know my dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes you ask that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked scared when you touched me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor didn&#39;t respond immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI&#39;m not scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But his voice had changed.<\/p>\n<p>After he left, I looked at my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, what is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned her face toward the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said someone knows why you&#39;re hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lips trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Her father, Daniel, had been gone for almost two years.<\/p>\n<p>Not dead.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>There was a difference.<\/p>\n<p>He had moved to another state after our divorce and gradually stopped calling. At first, he called every Sunday. Then every few weeks. Eventually, messages became short and formal.<\/p>\n<p>How is Emily?<\/p>\n<p>Hope school is going well.<\/p>\n<p>Tell her I said happy birthday.<\/p>\n<p>He had never shown much interest in her medical history.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that was what I believed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would your father know why you&#39;re hurting?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Emily finally turned back toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he did it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Almost too softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean, he did it before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the curtain again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want him to know I&#39;m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my pulse climb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, your father isn&#39;t here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn&#39;t know we&#39;re at this hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>A nurse returned to take her for imaging.<\/p>\n<p>Emily refused to release my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The hallway seemed longer than it had a few minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>We passed rooms separated by thin curtains. A man slept beneath a blanket. A woman spoke angrily into her phone.
