please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily sat rigidly on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years imagining what I would say if Daniel ever appeared again.<\/p>\n<p>None of those speeches survived the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do to her?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never hurt Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what she thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t get to choose where this conversation happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people who shouldn&#39;t know she&#39;s awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words silenced me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily suddenly spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat medicine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe white one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I&#39;m talking about,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were very sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made me sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel covered his face for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>When he lowered his hands, he looked defeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a terrible decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice came out low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat decision?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trusted the wrong person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before he could answer, Dr. Harris appeared at the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two men stared at each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn&#39;t be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could say the same to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something passed between them that I couldn&#39;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>Emily watched both men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always says he didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, you need to tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone please tell me what is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago, I was working at a different hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a pediatric patient with unexplained abdominal pain,\u201d the doctor continued.<\/p>\n<p>My hands became cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does that matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the case was unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because the same pattern appeared again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My daughter whispered, \u201cThat&#39;s why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows why it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel finally broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it had stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat had stopped?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat treatment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know what they were doing at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Dr. Harris.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor said one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the name.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Victor Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>A private physician whose name had appeared once in an argument Daniel and I had years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten it.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, Daniel hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Mercer?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was supposed to help her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelp her with what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was having episodes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe complained about pain. Nausea. Weakness. Sometimes she couldn&#39;t stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me those were stomachaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t want you to worry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took her to Mercer because he said he had seen similar cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave her medication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat medication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know the exact compound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re testing for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think she&#39;s been poisoned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said carefully. \u201cWe don&#39;t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter has been sick because of something someone gave her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to make her symptoms predictable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to know how much it took.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept asking when it started hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees almost gave out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dad said if I told you, they&#39;d take me away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I believed Mercer had people watching us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let my child live in fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to get evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou left her with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you would protect her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t get to call abandonment protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then a nurse entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor, the lab called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed as he listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRun it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn abnormal compound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it dangerous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mercer knows the result, he may come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you were trying to protect her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>She was trembling.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that night, I saw the father I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Not the man who disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not the stranger who had avoided my calls.<\/p>\n<p>A frightened father standing beside his sick child.<\/p>\n<p>Then the security officer rushed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor, there&#39;s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man is demanding to see Emily Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Victor Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s face went completely white.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bestonestory.online\/?p=327\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When the Doctor Who Had Been Watching My Daughter Appeared Outside Her Room, Her Father Finally Told Me the Part He Had Hidden<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel didn&#39;t come closer.
