course.”

“Row 34?”

She smiled.

“If available.”

“It is.”

I booked two seats.

But this time, Grandma asked me to book a third.

“Why?”

“I invited someone.”

“Who?”

“You'll see.”

That was all she would tell me.

At the airport, I found out.

Emily was standing beside her.

She had flown from Sacramento.

Grandma had invited her to join us.

I looked from one woman to the other.

“You planned this.”

Grandma smiled.

“Perhaps.”

Emily laughed.

“I've learned not to argue with her.”

We boarded together.

Row 34.

Grandma took the window.

Emily sat in the middle.

I sat on the aisle.

The arrangement felt strangely familiar.

Three generations of a story that should never have connected.

As the aircraft pushed back, Grandma reached for the armrest.

She still became quiet during takeoff.

Not frightened.

Thoughtful.

Emily noticed.

“Are you okay?”

Grandma nodded.

“I'm fine.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Then she looked at Emily.

“Your grandfather was afraid too.”

Emily smiled.

“I think he was.”

“He just didn't let fear decide what he did next.”

The plane climbed.

The city disappeared.

The clouds opened beneath us.

Grandma looked outside.

Then she turned toward Emily.

“This is what he saw.”

Emily looked through the window.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Emily whispered, “It's beautiful.”

Grandma smiled.

“He thought you'd like it.”

Emily's eyes filled.

“How could he know?”

“He didn't.”

Grandma touched her hand.

“He just knew people deserved to see something beautiful when they were scared.”

That became the theme of the entire flight.

We talked about Frank.

Not his death.

His life.

Emily told stories about the drawing.

Grandma told stories about burned pancakes and broken radios.

I told Emily about how Frank had never met me.

She said, “I think he knew you anyway.”

“How?”

“He was going to meet you.”

I looked at Grandma.

She nodded.

“He was.”

That simple fact still carried weight.

After lunch, a flight attendant approached.

She was younger than Carol.

But she knew Grandma.

“Mrs. Walsh?”

“Yes?”

“You have a message from the captain.”

She handed over a folded card.

Grandma opened it.

She smiled.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Danny.

He had written:

CHECK THE WINDOW.

Grandma laughed.

“He's impossible.”

Emily looked at her.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing.”

Grandma handed me the card.

I read it.

Then I understood.

Danny wasn't asking her to look at the scenery.

He was reminding her of the promise.

I passed the card to Emily.

She read it.

Then she looked outside.

“There.”

“What?”

She pointed.

A small aircraft was flying beneath us.

Its wings flashed in the sunlight.

Grandma smiled.

“That's enough.”

The flight continued.

Two hours later, the captain spoke over the intercom.

His voice was familiar.

Danny.

He announced our arrival time.

Then he paused.

“Before we begin our descent, I want to recognize someone who has traveled with us again today.”

Grandma looked at me.

Passengers turned.

Danny continued.

“Mrs. Ruth Walsh.”

The cabin applauded.

Grandma laughed.

Then cried.

Danny said nothing more.

He didn't need to.

When we landed, he met us at the gate.

He hugged Grandma.

Then Emily.

Then me.

“I've been waiting for this,” he said.

“For what?”

He looked at Emily.

“To meet the girl who drew Frank.”

Emily laughed.

“She was six.”

“She still drew him.”

Danny looked at the drawing.

Emily had brought it.

He studied it for a long time.

“He looked exactly like that.”

Grandma smiled.

“Even the hands?”

“Especially the hands.”

Danny touched the paper.

“I remember them.”

Emily looked at him.

“Did he really give you the wings?”

Danny nodded.

“Every word you heard was true.”

“Why did he give them to you?”

Danny looked toward Grandma.

“Because he knew I was scared.”

Emily nodded.

“I was scared too.”

Danny smiled.

“Then you understand him.”

They talked for nearly an hour.

Then Danny surprised us.

He took something from his bag.

A small envelope.

He gave it to Grandma.

She stared.

“What is this?”

“I found it in my father's old things.”

“Gene?”

“Yes.”

Grandma opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Frank.

Young.

Standing beside an airplane.

On the back was a date.

March 14, 1978.

Ten years before I was born.

Grandma stared at it.

“I've never seen this.”

Danny smiled.

“My father found it after Frank died.”

“Why didn't he give it to me?”

“He didn't know whether you wanted more memories.”

Grandma touched the photograph.

“What was Frank doing?”

Danny turned it over.

There was writing.

Frank had written:

One day I'll take Ruth flying.

Grandma laughed.

“He never did.”

Danny looked at her.

“Yes, he did.”

She stopped.

“What?”

“He took you.”

“No.”

“Not as a pilot.”

Danny pointed toward the plane.

“He brought you back.”

Grandma looked at him.

That sentence stayed with all of us.

Because he was right.

Frank had never flown her.

But somehow, twenty-seven years after his death, she had finally taken the journey he had once promised.

That evening, we stayed in San Francisco.

Grandma insisted on visiting the waterfront.

She stood there in the cold wind with her coat pulled tightly around her.

Emily stood beside her.

I watched them from a bench.

Two people who had never met Frank in the same place.

One had loved him.

The other had been helped by him.

Neither had forgotten.

Grandma finally sat beside me.

“You know what I think?”

“What?”

“I don't think we ever finish loving people.”

I looked at her.

“We just learn new places to put it.”

I smiled.

“That sounds like something you made up.”

“I did.”

“It was good.”

“I know.”

We laughed.

The next morning, Emily left for Sacramento.

Before she boarded, she hugged Grandma.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For finding me.”

Grandma shook her head.

“He found you first.”

Emily smiled.

Then she looked at me.

“You know what I think?”

“What?”

“He would have liked you.”

I laughed.

“You never met him.”

“Neither did you.”

That silenced me.

She was right.

I had spent years grieving a man I had never met.

Now I understood that perhaps I didn't need to know him directly.

I knew him through Grandma.

Through Danny.

Through Emily.

Through a boarding pass.

Through a seat.

Through a pair of silver wings.

And through the way strangers still remembered what he had done.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The
