A part of me wanted to forget the folder existed. I wanted to take my son somewhere quiet, close the curtains, and pretend the last twenty-four hours had been a nightmare that ended when the ambulance doors closed.

But the signature existed.

Someone had written my name.

And someone had expected me to live with the consequences.

The temporary apartment arranged through the hospital was small and plain. It had a narrow kitchen, one bedroom, and a window overlooking a parking lot. I didn't care. The first thing I did was place my son's bassinet beside the bed.

Then I sat on the edge of the mattress and stared at my hands.

I kept thinking about my husband's question from months earlier.

Do you still keep the documents in the house?

At the time, it had sounded harmless.

Now it sounded like a test.

The next morning, the detective arrived with another officer and a sealed evidence envelope.

My son was asleep in the bassinet.

I sat across from them at the small kitchen table.

The detective placed several photographs in front of me.

The first showed an insurance application.

The second showed a financial authorization.

The third was a form connected to an account I barely remembered opening.

Then she placed a fourth photograph on the table.

My name appeared at the bottom.

Beneath it was a signature.

I stared at it.

My stomach tightened.

“It looks like mine.”

The detective nodded.

“That is why this matters.”

I looked closer.

The letters were almost identical.

The same curve.

The same spacing.

Even the final stroke looked familiar.

But something bothered me.

“What is wrong with it?”

She slid another photograph beside the first.

“This is your actual signature from a document you signed at the hospital after your son's birth.”

I looked between them.

The difference was almost impossible to see.

Then the detective pointed to the last letter.

“Yours finishes upward.”

She pointed to the forged version.

“This one finishes downward.”

I stared.

She was right.

A tiny difference.

Something no one would notice unless they were looking for it.

“Who signed it?”

“We're still determining that.”

“You think my husband did?”

“We think someone close to you had access to your documents and enough knowledge of your signature to imitate it.”

I looked toward my sleeping son.

My husband had both.

Access.

Knowledge.

The detective continued.

“There is another issue.”

I waited.

“The documents were not all prepared on the same date.”

“What does that mean?”

“Some were created weeks before others.”

My mouth went dry.

This hadn't started yesterday.

It hadn't started with the argument.

Someone had been preparing things in advance.

The detective opened another photograph.

“This one involves a life insurance policy.”

I couldn't speak.

“How much?”

She told me the amount.

I stared at her.

It was far more than I had ever imagined my life was worth.

My husband had never told me about it.

I remembered him asking me months earlier whether I wanted to update our insurance.

I had said we could discuss it later.

He had told me not to worry about paperwork.

I had trusted him.

The detective asked, “Did you ever authorize a policy with him listed as the beneficiary?”

“No.”

“Did you sign anything related to it?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“We thought you'd say that.”

I felt sick.

The baby stirred.

I stood and walked to the bassinet.

He opened his eyes.

I picked him up and held him against my chest.

The detective waited.

I whispered to my son, “I'm here.”

Then I turned back.

“Why would he need that?”

The detective didn't answer immediately.

“You should ask him.”

I shook my head.

“I don't want to ask him anything.”

That was the first time I realized something important.

I didn't need another confession.

I had already heard enough.

What I needed was evidence.

The detective handed me a copy of the police report.

“Your husband has been informed not to contact you directly.”

I nodded.

“His mother?”

“The same.”

I felt a small amount of relief.

Then the detective added, “He has requested that you withdraw your statement.”

I almost smiled.

Of course he had.

“What did he say?”

“He says the incident was a misunderstanding.”

I looked at the bruises still visible on my wrist.

“A misunderstanding doesn't forge a signature.”

The detective didn't respond.

She didn't need to.

That afternoon, I received a call from the insurance company.

A representative confirmed that an application had been submitted in my name.

I asked who submitted it.

They couldn't disclose everything while the investigation was active.

But they confirmed something else.

The application had been initiated from an email account belonging to my husband.

I closed my eyes.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

The pressure to sign.

The questions about documents.

The strange interest in my finances.

The conversations recorded by the monitor.

The determination to stop me from leaving.

My husband hadn't simply lost his temper.

He had been afraid.

Afraid I would leave.

Afraid I would discover the paperwork.

Afraid I would tell someone.

That night, I barely slept.

Every sound from the hallway woke me.

At three in the morning, my son cried.

I picked him up immediately.

I walked around the dark bedroom until he settled.

When I looked out the window, a car was parked beneath the streetlight.

I couldn't see the driver.

I watched it for several minutes.

Then it moved.

I told myself it was nothing.

But I no longer trusted myself to dismiss things.

The next morning, the detective called again.

“We found something else.”

I sat down.

“What?”

“There was a second folder.”

My stomach dropped.

“Where?”

“At your mother-in-law's house.”

“What was in it?”

“Copies of your identification documents.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“That is what we're trying to establish.”

Then she added something that made my blood run colder.

“There was also a draft letter.”

“What kind of letter?”

“One that appears to have been written as if you were voluntarily transferring control of certain financial assets.”

I stared at the wall.

“I never wrote that.”

“We know.”

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Then what were they planning?”

The detective's voice became careful.

“We don't know the entire plan yet.”

I looked at my sleeping son.

“But you think the attack was connected.”

“We think the timing is significant.”

I knew what she meant.

They had been preparing documents.

Then they attacked me.

Then they tried to prevent me from leaving.

The baby monitor had captured them discussing my exhaustion.

And when I escaped, they immediately started asking me not to tell anyone.

There was only one conclusion I could reach.

They had believed they were running out of time.

The detective said, “There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“The draft letter was dated for tomorrow.”

I went completely still.

Tomorrow.

Not yesterday.

Not last week.

Tomorrow.

Whatever they had planned had not ended when I escaped.

It had simply been interrupted.

I looked at my son.

Then toward the locked apartment door.

For the first time since leaving the house, I understood that getting away from my husband was only the first step.

I had escaped the room.

I had not yet escaped the plan.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Plan Had a Date, a Signature,
