ended.

I played it again.

Then again.

The second recording was longer.

Lily sounded exhausted.

She said she had discovered something about her father.

My husband.

She believed he had not died when we were told he had.

At first I refused to believe it.

My husband had supposedly died overseas while working.

I had seen the death certificate.

I had identified his belongings.

I had buried him.

For seven years, I had mourned him.

But Lily had found inconsistencies.

A bank account had been active after his supposed death.

A phone number had been used.

Someone had withdrawn money.

And Robert knew about it.

I stopped the recording.

My hands were numb.

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Did you me.”

I ended the call.

Not because I was angry.

Because I suddenly understood something.

Everyone around Lily had been giving me pieces.

No one had given me the whole truth.

The third recording contained the missing piece.

Lily was crying.

“Mom, if you ever hear this, I am sorry.”

I leaned closer.

“I should have told you sooner.”

Her breathing shook.

“I didn't know who I could trust.”

Then she said a name.

Not Daniel.

Not Robert.

My own.

“Mom, you are the only person I trust.”

I began crying.

“I know you think I kept the baby’s father secret because I was ashamed.”

She paused.

“That isn't why.”

A sound came from somewhere behind her.

She stopped talking.

I heard a door close.

Then her voice returned, barely above a whisper.

“The baby's father isn't the person everyone thinks he is.”

The recording ended.

I sat frozen.

I replayed it.

The same sentence.

Again.

Again.

Then I heard something I hadn't noticed the first time.

A man's voice in the background.

Very faint.

I increased the volume.

The voice said one word.

“Lily.”

I stopped the recording.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it hundreds of times.

It was my husband's voice.

My hands began shaking so violently that the phone slipped from my fingers.

For seven years I had believed he was dead.

Now I was listening to him calling our daughter's name.

I picked up the phone.

The fourth recording was only twelve seconds long.

It contained a number.

Lily recited it slowly.

Then she said:

“Mom, this is the number Dad uses now.”

I wrote it down.

I didn't call immediately.

I sat at the kitchen table until dawn.

At 6:11 in the morning, the phone rang.

It was Daniel.

“You shouldn't call that number.”

“Why?”

“Because I already did.”

“What happened?”

“He answered.”

My mouth went dry.

“What did he say?”

Daniel was silent.

“Daniel?”

“He asked me whether Lily had told you the truth.”

“What truth?”

“He said Noah isn't his grandson.”

I stood.

“What?”

“He said Noah is his son.”

I couldn't here.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I'm being followed.”

The line went dead.

I stood alone in the kitchen.

Outside, the first sunlight was touching the windows.

For seven years I had believed I had buried my husband.

For ten years, I had believed I understood the story of my daughter.

Now I was beginning to realize that both beliefs might have been built on lies.

And upstairs, sleeping peacefully in the next room, was a little boy whose entire identity had been hidden from me.

I walked to his bedroom.

He opened his eyes.

“Grandma?”

I sat beside him.

He reached for my hand.

I held it tightly.

For the first time, I wasn't only afraid of what I might discover.

I was afraid of what someone else might do to keep me from discovering it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Man I Buried Seven Years Earlier Answered a Phone Call, and His First Question
