The rain had started outside the treehouse, tapping against the roof in a soft, steady rhythm. I heard it, but the sound seemed impossibly far away.

Mara had been beside me at the funeral.

She had held Noah while I signed the papers.

She had brought meals when I was too exhausted to cook.

When I returned to work, she had watched Noah during the afternoons. When he became sick, she had driven him to the clinic. When he took his first steps, she had been there laughing with me.

And Lily had trusted her enough to call her Aunt Mara.

I played the recording again.

Lily's voice came through the speaker, quiet and frightened.

“Mom, if you're hearing this, then I couldn't get away.”

A breath.

“Mara knows about the records.”

I gripped the recorder.

“She knows what Dad did. She knows what Robert did. it.

That last sentence was enough to keep me from immediately calling the police.

I climbed down from the treehouse and drove straight to my sister's house.

Mara opened the door wearing the same gray sweater she had worn the previous Sunday.

She smiled when she saw me.

Then she noticed my face.

“What happened?”

I held up the recorder.

Her expression disappeared.

“Where did you find that?”

“In Lily's treehouse.”

She stepped backward.

I walked inside.

“Did you kill my daughter?”

Mara closed the door behind me.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

“Lily said your name.”

“I know.”

“She said you knew what happened.”

“I did.”

“She said you knew about the records.”

“I did.”

“She said you were there the night she died.”

Mara looked toward the kitchen.

“I was.”

My throat tightened.

“Why?”

“Because she called me.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she was afraid.”

“You told me you didn't know she was afraid.”

“I lied.”

The admission landed heavily.

“Why?”

Mara sat at the kitchen table.

“Because Lily made me promise.”

I remained standing.

“What promise?”

“That I would never tell you unless she couldn't.”

“Couldn't what?”

“Protect you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“She was eighteen.”

“I know.”

“She was dying.”

“I know.”

“And you kept secrets from me.”

Mara looked at me.

“She believed telling you everything would put you in danger.”

I thought about the recordings.

The false documents.

My husband.

Robert.

The network.

“And what did you do?”

“I tried to get her out.”

“When?”

“The night before she went into labor.”

My heart began pounding.

Mara explained that Lily had called her from a pay phone because she believed her own phone was being monitored.

“She said she had found the original records.”

“What records?”

“The ones proving Dad had been using different identities and moving money through other people's names.”

I looked down.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your husband had threatened me.”

“With what?”

“With you.”

She swallowed.

“He told me that if I helped Lily, you would disappear too.”

I wanted to believe her.

But I had learned that belief was dangerous.

“Then why did Lily name you?”

Mara looked at the recorder.

“Because I was there when she took the medication.”

My blood ran cold.

“What medication?”

“The doctor prescribed something for pain.”

“During labor?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She was already bleeding.”

Mara's voice broke.

“She begged me not to let them give her another dose.”

“Who?”

“The nurse.”

I stared.

“What nurse?”

“The woman who kept coming into the room.”

I remembered the hospital.

The nurse who had told me Lily was losing too much blood.

The same nurse who had brought me to see the baby.

Mara continued.

“She said the nurse was working for Robert.”

I felt sick.

“Then why did you say you were there?”

“Because Lily asked me to watch what they were doing.”

I sat across from her.

“What happened?”

Mara wiped her eyes.

“The nurse left a syringe on the tray.”

“And?”

“Lily told me not to let anyone touch her.”

“Did you?”

Mara looked down.

“I was outside the room when the alarm went off.”

My heart sank.

“You left?”

“For two minutes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone called me.”

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

“Mara.”

She finally whispered, “Robert.”

The kitchen seemed to shrink around us.

“What did he want?”

“He said Lily had something that belonged to him.”

“The records.”

“Yes.”

“And you gave them to him?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I told him I didn't know where they were.”

Mara reached into a drawer and removed an envelope.

“I kept this.”

I opened it.

Inside were copies of hospital records.

One page showed a medication administered to Lily shortly before her condition deteriorated.

Another page showed the signature of a nurse.

I recognized the name.

The same nurse who had spoken to me that night.

I looked at Mara.

“Why didn't the hospital tell me?”

“Because someone altered the file.”

“Who?”

“Robert.”

I studied the page.

There was a handwritten correction.

A dosage had been crossed out.

Beside it was another number.

Mara whispered, “That was the overdose.”

My hands began shaking.

“Are you saying Lily was murdered?”

“I think so.”

“By the nurse?”

“I don't know.”

“But Lily named you.”

“She named me because she wanted you to investigate me.”

“Why?”

Mara's eyes filled.

“Because I was the last person she trusted.”

That sentence hurt.

I remembered the recording.

Don't hate her before you hear the whole thing.*

Lily had known I would blame Mara.

She had also known Mara would be able to lead me to the truth.

I looked at the documents again.

“There has to be more.”

“There is.”

Mara opened another drawer.

She removed a photograph.

It showed the hospital corridor.

Lily was being wheeled toward the delivery room.

Behind her stood Robert.

And behind Robert stood the nurse.

But there was another person in the photograph.

My husband.

Alive.

Standing beside the elevator.

I looked at the date.

The photograph had been taken on the night Lily died.

“He was there.”

Mara nodded.

“I told you he had been.”

“You never told me he was at the hospital.”

“He threatened me.”

“With what?”

“He said if I spoke, he would make sure Noah disappeared.”

I closed my eyes.

Then something clicked.

“The hospital bracelet.”

Mara looked at me.

“What about it?”

“Lily hid something inside it.”

“How do you know?”

“She left a clue.”

Mara became very still.

“Where is it?”

“I don't have it.”

“You gave it to Noah.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“The bracelet was in the envelope Lily gave you.”

“I never had an envelope.”

Mara shook her head.

“You did.”

“No.”

She stared at me.

“Then someone took it.”

I thought about the boxes.

The old paperwork.

The documents I had searched through.

Then I remembered something.

The day after Lily's funeral, Robert had offered to organize her belongings.

I had been too exhausted to refuse.

He had taken several boxes.

One of them contained Noah's hospital records.

I stood.

“Robert.”

Mara nodded.

“He took it.”

I grabbed my coat.

“We need to find him.”

“He's already in custody.”

“Then we find where he hid the records.”

Mara caught my arm.

“Wait.”

“What?”

She looked frightened.

“There is something you don't know.”

“What?”

“The man you arrested wasn't Robert.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She shook her head.

“The man at the warehouse was an associate.”

“Then where is Robert?”

Mara's face went pale.

“He's been living in your sister's house.”

I looked around.

My sister's house.

Her house.

Her address.

The place where Noah had stayed.

The place where Robert could have watched us.

Then I heard a floorboard creak upstairs.

Mara stopped breathing.

I slowly looked toward the staircase.

Someone was standing at the top.

A man's voice came from the darkness.

“You finally figured it out.”

I knew the voice.

Robert.

<a
