A box of tissues had been placed near the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won&#39;t need those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel gave me a small smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We began with ordinary matters.<\/p>\n<p>The house.<\/p>\n<p>Bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Documents.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral expenses.<\/p>\n<p>A few charitable commitments Dad had made.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to focus, but my mind kept returning to Mark&#39;s words.<\/p>\n<p>Your inheritance is more than enough for us to live on.<\/p>\n<p>When Samuel closed the folder, I knew we were moving to something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something Walter wanted me to discuss with you before we talk about the numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached for a second folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark ever tell you that he came to see your father without you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know who you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe visited Walter about eight months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t mention it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an in-person meeting, followed by a phone conversation and later an email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth felt dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they talk about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband discussed my inheritance with my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore specifically, he discussed what he believed your future financial position would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because anything was funny.<\/p>\n<p>Because it was becoming absurd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mark say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pulled out a handwritten letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to read this yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Dad\u2019s handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The block letters.<\/p>\n<p>The heavy pressure on the downstrokes.<\/p>\n<p>The way he occasionally crossed a lowercase t twice when he was irritated.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began to tremble.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel said, \u201cWalter instructed me to give you this after his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had written about the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>He said Mark had arrived alone and talked about how tired he was of working. At first, Dad had listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark had started talking about what would happen after Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>I read slowly.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dad\u2019s notes, Mark had said that once I inherited, he could finally stop working.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s response was simple.<\/p>\n<p>Clare inherits.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had apparently laughed.<\/p>\n<p>We&#39;re married.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe actually said that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what your father recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down again.<\/p>\n<p>The words on the page blurred for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had written that Mark seemed to regard my inheritance as a household asset before it even existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t Dad tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat question is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father knew you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew I would defend Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel didn&#39;t deny it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed that if he confronted you while he was alive, you might spend the rest of his life trying to convince him that Mark was misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad knew me too well.<\/p>\n<p>I would have.<\/p>\n<p>I would have said Mark was tired.<\/p>\n<p>I would have said he didn&#39;t mean it that way.<\/p>\n<p>I would have reminded Dad that twenty-two years of marriage couldn&#39;t be reduced to one conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel opened another file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father didn&#39;t want to leave you his opinion of your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to leave you choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel explained the trust.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Dad&#39;s estate had been placed into a trust with me as the beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>The assets intended for me were worth approximately $3.8 million, not including the house.<\/p>\n<p>I sat very still.<\/p>\n<p>The number was enormous.<\/p>\n<p>But what mattered more was what came next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first five years,\u201d Samuel said, \u201ccertain extraordinary distributions require approval from an independent trustee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtraordinary distributions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLarge gifts. Major speculative investments. Significant transfers to relatives. Things of that nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if I wanted to give Melissa two hundred thousand dollars\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trustee would review it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I wanted to buy Diane a house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at Dad\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was concerned about pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My first reaction was anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t sound like trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel folded his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter wasn&#39;t trying to control what you did with the money. He was trying to make sure you had enough time to decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecide what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pushed another page toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had written a final note.<\/p>\n<p>He said he knew Mark had been a good husband in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>He said one conversation should not erase twenty-two years.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the sentence that broke something open inside me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not want to leave me his judgment of Mark along with his money.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the heel of my hand against my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel waited.<\/p>\n<p>When I finally looked up, he said quietly, \u201cYour father wasn&#39;t trying to decide whether you should stay married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted you to have enough time that nobody could decide for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took one tissue from the box.<\/p>\n<p>Just one.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned home, Mark was waiting in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put my purse down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Green say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, what are the terms?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You meant how much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine. How much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not discussing numbers today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I buried my father this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>For a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cHow long before the money becomes available?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#39;t work that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He began pacing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we need permission to use our own money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we borrow against it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, I already quit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not I made a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Not I should have spoken to you.<\/p>\n<p>Not I&#39;m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>I already quit.<\/p>\n<p>As though his resignation had created an obligation that I now had to solve.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I woke shortly after one in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>I went downstairs for water.<\/p>\n<p>As I reached the bottom of the staircase, I heard Mark speaking quietly in the den.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, don&#39;t panic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He was on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money exists. It\u2019s just tied up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Melissa&#39;s name when he said it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark said something that made me grip the banister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare will come around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stayed still.<\/p>\n<p>He continued talking.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t hear every word, but I heard enough.<\/p>\n<p>They had plans.<\/p>\n<p>They believed the money was coming.<\/p>\n<p>And Mark was confident I would eventually agree.<\/p>\n<p>I went back upstairs without making a sound.<\/p>\n<p>For once, I didn&#39;t want him to know what I knew.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I sat across from him at breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>He spread peanut butter on toast.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the knife move slowly across the bread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides the house for your mother and the money for Melissa, what else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else have you planned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, it&#39;s seven in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He set down the knife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we really doing this again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think we ever finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.
