next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you expected my inheritance to fund it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I sat alone in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he submit it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bank contacted us because they needed confirmation of the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he have access to anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t confront him until we know exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Mark was standing there.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#39;t supposed to be home yet.<\/p>\n<p>His face was unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you been there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was still on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you talking to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark asked quietly, \u201cWhat did Samuel tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held the phone in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout your loan application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Dad died, I saw genuine fear in my husband&#39;s face.<\/p>\n<p>He took one step toward
