Do not confront Mark.

I barely slept.

At six, I heard Mark moving around downstairs.

He made coffee.

He showered.

He dressed.

Everything sounded ordinary.

That normality made the house feel unreal.

When I came downstairs, he was standing at the counter in his work shirt.

“Morning.”

“Morning.”

He looked at me.

“I didn't sleep.”

“Neither did I.”

He stared into his door.

“Clare.”

“Yes?”

“I didn't do what you think I did.”

Then he left.

I watched his car disappear.

An hour later, I was sitting across from Samuel.

He placed the second document in front of me.

It was an internal agreement connected to MDC Family Holdings.

The date was three months before Dad died.

The purpose was listed as estate planning and anticipated family wealth management.

I looked at the ownership percentages.

They were already there.

Mark fifty.

Diane twenty-five.

Melissa twenty-five.

My name nowhere.

“What does this mean?”

Samuel answered carefully.

“It means the structure existed before your father died.”

“Why?”

“That is what the investigators are trying to establish.”

I read the document again.

There was a projected transfer date.

It was six months in the future.

The amount was nearly identical to the trust's expected liquid assets.

I looked at Samuel.

“He knew the amount.”

“Apparently.”

“How?”

“We don't know.”

I felt sick.

Dad had never told me the value.

Samuel had told me only after his death.

Mark had known before then.

“Did Dad tell him?”

“No.”

“Then how did he know?”

Samuel pointed to another page.

A financial worksheet.

It contained information about Dad's company sale.

Old investment accounts.

Property values.

Projected taxes.

Even the approximate value of the house.

Some numbers were public.

Others weren't.

“Where did this come from?”

“We're tracing it.”

I looked at the bottom.

There was a handwritten notation.

A phone number.

I recognized it.

It belonged to Dad's former financial adviser.

“Mark knew him?”

“I believe so.”

I sat back.

“Did they meet?”

Samuel nodded.

“Twice.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Mark had been quietly assembling pieces of Dad's financial life.

Not after the funeral.

Not after the will was read.

Months before Dad died.

“Why didn't Dad stop him?”

“Your father didn't know the full extent of it.”

Samuel gave me another page.

It was an email.

Dad had written to Samuel three months before his death.

He said Mark had recently become unusually interested in estate matters.

Dad wrote that he was concerned but did not want to accuse him.

Then came a sentence that made me stop.

Walter wrote that if Clare ever discovered something she could not explain, she should look at who benefited from the arrangement.

I read it twice.

The beneficiaries were obvious.

Mark.

Diane.

Melissa.

I suddenly understood why Dad had included restrictions.

It wasn't simply about Mark.

It was about the whole structure.

My father had seen that Mark's plans extended beyond himself.

He had been preparing to move money through his mother and sister.

The three of them would each receive something.

And I would lose control.

Samuel watched me.

“Clare, there is one more issue.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

“The investigators found that the signature on the disputed agreement was created from a scanned copy.”

My skin prickled.

“A scanned copy of what?”

“An old document you signed.”

“What document?”

“A tax form.”

I remembered.

Three years earlier, Mark had helped organize our tax paperwork.

He had asked me to sign several forms.

I had trusted him.

The investigators believed someone had taken my signature from that document and digitally transferred it.

I closed my eyes.

“How could they prove it?”

“They found metadata.”

“On the agreement?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“On a computer associated with MDC Family Holdings.”

My hands tightened.

“Was it Mark's computer?”

“We don't know whether he was the person who created it.”

That distinction mattered.

And it bothered me.

Because there was still a possibility I didn't understand.

Mark could be reckless.

He could be selfish.

He could be financially irresponsible.

But had he really forged my signature?

I wasn't ready to believe it.

Then Samuel gave me something else.

A printed text conversation.

Between Mark and Melissa.

The messages were dated six weeks before Dad died.

Melissa had written:

Are you sure she won't find out?

Mark replied:

Not if we do it correctly.

My hands began to shake.

I read the next message.

What if Dad doesn't leave enough?

Mark:

He will.

Melissa:

How do you know?

Mark:

Because I've seen the numbers.

I put the pages down.

Samuel didn't speak.

I stared at the table.

My husband had been discussing my father's death as a financial event before my father had even died.

I whispered, “I can't do this.”

Samuel's voice softened.

“You don't have to decide everything today.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That is what Dad wanted.”

“Yes.”

“And he was right.”

When I returned home, Mark was already there.

He was sitting at the dining table.

There was an envelope in front of him.

“What is that?”

“My resignation withdrawal.”

I stopped.

“You got your job back?”

“Not yet.”

“But they offered me something.”

“What?”

“A consulting position.”

“That sounds good.”

“It would mean working again.”

I looked at him.

“Maybe that's necessary.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

For a moment, we simply sat there.

Then he said, “I know you think I was waiting for your father to die.”

I didn't answer.

“I wasn't.”

I looked at him.

“I was waiting for our life to change.”

“Those aren't the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“I made plans.”

“You made plans with money that wasn't yours.”

“I thought we were going to share it.”

“You decided that.”

“Yes.”

He looked exhausted.

“I didn't understand how much this would hurt you.”

“That's the problem.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I wanted him to say something that would make it simpler.

I wanted him to tell me he had never forged anything.

That Melissa had misunderstood.

That the company was harmless.

That the loan application had been a mistake.

Instead, he said, “I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Of being poor again.”

That surprised me.

Mark had never talked about being poor.

He told me his father had lost his business when Mark was young.

His mother had worked two jobs.

He had promised himself he would never live that way again.

“I thought if we had enough money,” he said, “I'd never have to watch my family struggle again.”

“You could have told me.”

“I thought you'd say no.”

“And you decided no didn't matter.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

That admission hurt more than an argument would have.

I looked away.

Later that night, Samuel called.

“The investigators found the person who notarized the disputed document.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

“A mobile notary.”

“Did she know me?”

“No.”

“Then how did she notarize it?”

Samuel hesitated.

“She says a woman came to her office with the document.”

“A woman?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“She doesn't know.”

“But she remembers her.”

“Apparently.”

I stood.

“What did she look like?”

“Late thirties. Dark hair. Gray coat.”

My stomach tightened.

“Could it have been Melissa?”

“We don't know.”

I sat down slowly.

Melissa was thirty-nine.

Dark hair.

And she had been desperate for money.

But suspicion wasn't proof.

Samuel continued.

“The notary also said the woman told her the signature belonged to her sister.”

My blood ran cold.

“Her sister?”

“Yes.”

I looked toward the staircase.

Mark was upstairs.

And suddenly the question was no longer whether he had done everything himself.

It was whether someone else had helped him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Melissa Denied Knowing Anything About the Forged Signature, Until Investigators Found the One Message She Thought She Had Deleted Forever

Samuel's message contained only one sentence.
