It wasn&#39;t listed with the other investment accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn his home office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it a bank statement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It was a note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust an account number and a bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark named it.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>He knew it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you access the account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you have authorization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know it still exists?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you think it belonged to Walter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause his name was on the note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel asked, \u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA second name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it listed as joint owner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeneficiary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe note said, \u2018For Clare only.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>My father had written those words.<\/p>\n<p>For Clare only.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly remembered something from years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had once told me that every parent eventually learns there are things children don&#39;t need to know until they are ready.<\/p>\n<p>I had laughed and accused him of being mysterious.<\/p>\n<p>He had smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this was what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel asked Mark for the account number.<\/p>\n<p>Mark read it slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll verify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s something else,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Dad knew I found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the file wasn&#39;t hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was sitting inside an old box of company documents. house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I followed him.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived, the house looked exactly as I had left it.<\/p>\n<p>The curtains were closed.<\/p>\n<p>The mail sat on the entry table.<\/p>\n<p>A half-dead plant stood beside the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing seemed disturbed.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel went straight to Dad&#39;s old study.<\/p>\n<p>He opened the desk drawers one by one.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The investigators arrived shortly afterward.<\/p>\n<p>They searched the room carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, one of them found a small envelope behind the bottom drawer.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across it.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was Dad&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook as I estate.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said he had initially dismissed it as ordinary concern.<\/p>\n<p>Then he noticed a change.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stopped asking how Dad felt.<\/p>\n<p>He started asking what Dad owned.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence made my eyes burn.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had created the account for one reason.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted me to have money that could never become a bargaining chip inside my marriage.<\/p>\n<p>The account contained $650,000.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the number.<\/p>\n<p>It was separate from the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Separate from the what your father meant by giving you time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read the final paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wrote that if I ever needed to leave a situation without worrying about where I would sleep, how I would pay bills, or whether I could support myself, this account was meant to make that possible.<\/p>\n<p>He did not tell me to leave my marriage.<\/p>\n<p>He did not tell me to stay.<\/p>\n<p>He simply wanted me to be free.<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then the investigator asked, \u201cMrs. Hail, did your husband know about this account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mark&#39;s empty chair beside the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew something existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not the amount?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Later that evening, Mark called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you find it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it contain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething my father left for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s your first question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve said that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed he meant it now.<\/p>\n<p>But regret did not erase what he had done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark, I need you to answer something honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Dad had not put protections around the trust, would you have transferred the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least you&#39;re honest now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you have told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I slept in my friend&#39;s guest room with Dad&#39;s letter beside me.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since his death, I slept deeply.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Samuel called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigators have reached a preliminary conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat conclusion?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey believe Mark acted alone in creating the forged authorization, although Melissa unknowingly assisted by delivering the document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on the prosecutor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFully protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the hidden account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad&#39;s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Everything he had done had been designed around one simple principle.<\/p>\n<p>I had to be able to
