She was one of the nurses assigned to Walter during his final hospital stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered her.<\/p>\n<p>Young.<\/p>\n<p>Quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Always checking Dad&#39;s oxygen line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would a nurse know about a folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father told her something before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked her to make sure certain records weren&#39;t altered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence made my skin prickle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAltered by whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>The following afternoon, Rachel agreed to meet us.<\/p>\n<p>She arrived at Samuel&#39;s office wearing a navy cardigan and carrying a canvas bag.<\/p>\n<p>She looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t sure I minutes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho silenced it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut someone was in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw him removed a small envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a bank transfer receipt showing that twenty-five thousand dollars had been deposited into an account she had never authorized.<\/p>\n<p>Then a second document.<\/p>\n<p>A transfer reversal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, this changes everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t take my eyes off the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had died believing the estate was the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the estate wasn&#39;t the only problem.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I went home and found Mark sitting in the me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do in Dad&#39;s room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you touch his medical equipment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you take anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes returned to mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lie was too quick.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going to ask you one more time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t hurt your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not what I had asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you take the brown folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then he whispered, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had documents that could destroy my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI looked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecords about my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does your father have to do with mine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was Richard Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Bell died twenty-seven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean, no?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I
