She knew which signatures could be copied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn&#39;t just Walter&#39;s employee,\u201d Richard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Diane had been Richard&#39;s wife.<\/p>\n<p>Before she married anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Before Mark grew up believing his father worse.<\/p>\n<p>Diane had known Richard was alive.<\/p>\n<p>Diane had known about the money.<\/p>\n<p>Diane had known Dad.<\/p>\n<p>And she had helped Mark create MDC Family Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz called for another detective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to locate Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the ledger again.<\/p>\n<p>There were entries dated only weeks before Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>That couldn&#39;t be right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are there recent entries?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked.<\/p>\n<p>His face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter continued tracking her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTracking Diane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad had apparently discovered that Diane had resumed contact with Richard.<\/p>\n<p>And that Mark had become involved.<\/p>\n<p>The recent entries documented payments.<\/p>\n<p>Not from the estate.<\/p>\n<p>From Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>There was a note beside one payment.<\/p>\n<p>For information about the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>For access to medical records.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>For documents.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went addressed to Mark.<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad told Mark he knew about the meetings with Richard.<\/p>\n<p>He knew about the corporation.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Mark had been asking questions about the inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>And he knew Diane had been encouraging him.<\/p>\n<p>But Dad offered Mark one chance.<\/p>\n<p>Walk away.<\/p>\n<p>Keep working.<\/p>\n<p>Do not touch the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Do not enter my house without permission.<\/p>\n<p>Do not use Clare&#39;s name on anything.<\/p>\n<p>If you do, I will tell Clare everything.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>Three months before Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had ignored every warning.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father was trying to give him a way out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe chose not to take never named the person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>There was another clue.<\/p>\n<p>A set of initials.<\/p>\n<p>E.B.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is E.B.?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at the initials.<\/p>\n<p>His face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He whispered a name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room fell silent.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s sister.<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s aunt.<\/p>\n<p>A woman I had never heard of.<\/p>\n<p>Richard explained that Evelyn had handled the family&#39;s finances after his disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>She had access to old company records.<\/p>\n<p>She had motive.<\/p>\n<p>But she had died twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how could she be involved now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>It was Detective Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, we found Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came to the police station
