interview room when we arrived.

She looked smaller than she had at my dining table.

No makeup.

No jewelry.

Her coat folded neatly over the chair beside her.

When I entered, she looked at me.

“I suppose you know.”

I sat across from her.

“I know enough to stop believing you.”

She nodded.

“That is fair.”

Detective Ortiz remained by the wall.

Richard stood outside the room.

Diane saw him through the glass.

Her face changed.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear.

“You didn't know he was alive,” I said.

“I did.”

“How long?”

“Twenty-seven years.”

“Why did you tell Mark his father was dead?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Richard?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Of what Richard had done.”

I waited.

Diane explained that Richard had been responsible for moving money from Hail Mechanical into accounts he controlled.

She had discovered it.

She confronted him.

He denied everything.

Then he disappeared.

“I thought Walter had killed him,” she said.

“You thought my father killed your husband?”

“I thought he had arranged it.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard threatened Walter.”

She described a confrontation shortly before Richard vanished.

Richard had demanded money.

Walter refused.

Richard said he would destroy the company.

Then he disappeared.

Diane believed Walter was responsible.

So she began gathering documents.

But the documents told a different story.

Richard had indeed moved money.

Diane had forged some records.

She admitted it.

“Why?”

“To make sure Mark believed his father was innocent.”

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.”

“It did to me.”

“You lied to your son for decades.”

“Yes.”

“You told him his father was dead.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him build a company to receive my inheritance.”

Her eyes filled.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought it was the only way to repair what had been stolen from my family.”

I felt my anger rise.

“You weren't repairing anything.”

“I know.”

She looked down.

“I became obsessed.”

That word sounded inadequate.

“What about the forged signature?”

“I didn't do that.”

I froze.

“Mark admitted he did.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you say you didn't?”

“Because there were two signatures.”

I remembered Samuel's words.

Two documents.

Two forged signatures.

Diane continued.

“Mark copied your name onto the company documents.”

“And the other?”

“I don't know.”

“Who forged the second?”

She shook her head.

“Evelyn.”

My heart stopped.

“She's dead.”

“I know.”

“Then how?”

Diane looked at me.

“Her son.”

I stared.

“Who is her son?”

Diane's expression became strange.

“Peter.”

The name meant nothing.

“Peter Bell?”

“Yes.”

Richard's nephew.

Evelyn's son.

“What does he want?”

“Everything.”

Diane explained that Peter had spent years believing Walter destroyed his family's reputation.

After Evelyn died, he inherited her records.

He discovered the old dispute.

Then he found Richard.

He also found Mark.

“He brought them together,” Diane said.

“Why?”

“To use Mark.”

I thought about the storage unit.

The photographs.

The documents.

The secret meetings.

Everything began making sense.

Peter had information about my father.

He knew about the trust.

He knew Mark was desperate.

He fed Mark the story that Richard had been robbed.

He gave Mark access to forged documents.

He encouraged the creation of MDC.

But why?

Diane answered.

“Because Peter wanted the company.”

“What company?”

“Hail Mechanical.”

My father's company had been sold years earlier, but a large portion of the sale proceeds remained invested.

The trust contained those investments.

Peter believed he could challenge the estate using the old partnership dispute.

If he succeeded, he could force a settlement.

“How much?”

“Millions.”

I looked at Ortiz.

“This is bigger than Mark.”

“Yes.”

Diane lowered her voice.

“But there is one thing Peter doesn't know.”

“What?”

“The original ledger.”

“The one we found?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

My heart sank.

“There are two ledgers.”

I remembered the black book.

“Where is the other?”

“Walter hid it.”

“Where?”

Diane looked toward the glass.

“Richard knows.”

We brought Richard inside.

Diane stared at him.

“You never told them.”

Richard looked exhausted.

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't trust you.”

She almost smiled.

“You never trusted anyone.”

Richard looked at me.

“Your father gave me the original ledger six years ago.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted me to know the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That Evelyn had been stealing from the company long before I disappeared.”

Diane closed her eyes.

Richard continued.

“She had been creating false vendor accounts.”

“Why didn't you expose her?”

“Because she threatened Mark.”

My chest tightened.

“What did she threaten?”

“She said if I reported her, she'd make sure Mark was arrested for crimes he didn't commit.”

“So you disappeared to protect him.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Diane.

“And you thought Richard abandoned you.”

“I thought he abandoned Mark.”

The room fell silent.

A complicated family history had been built on fear, lies, and assumptions.

And somehow my marriage had become entangled in it.

“Where is the original ledger?” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Your father gave it to you.”

I frowned.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“On your wedding day.”

I stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard smiled sadly.

“Your father gave you a wooden box.”

I remembered.

A small walnut box.

He had told me it was a keepsake.

I had kept it in the attic.

My breath caught.

“The box.”

Richard nodded.

“The ledger is inside.”

We returned to my house with police officers.

The attic smelled of dust and old cardboard.

I found the box behind Christmas decorations.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Clare,

Some things are safer when you don't know what they mean until you need them.

Under the note was a thin leather-bound ledger.

I opened it.

The first page contained dates from twenty-seven years earlier.

Then I saw the final entry.

Six months before Dad died.

A payment.

Not to Richard.

Not to Diane.

Not to Mark.

To Peter Bell.

My heart stopped.

“What is it?”

Ortiz read the page.

Her expression hardened.

“Your father paid Peter.”

“Why?”

We turned the page.

A note was written underneath.

To keep him from reaching Clare.

I stared at the words.

Dad had known Peter was coming.

And he had paid him to stay away.

But Peter hadn't stayed away.

He had simply waited.

Then I noticed the date.

The payment had been made only three days before Mark first asked me about Dad's inheritance.

I looked at Ortiz.

“This wasn't about an inheritance.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“It was about me.”

Before anyone could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice said, “Your father knew what I wanted.”

“Peter?”

A quiet laugh.

“You've found the ledger.”

I froze.

“How?”

“You're holding something that belongs to my family.”

“It belongs to me.”

“No.”

The line went silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Meet me tomorrow morning, or you'll never learn why your father really died.”

The call ended.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Man on the Phone Knew About Dad’s Final
