She had manipulated both sides of the family.<\/p>\n<p>She convinced Richard that Walter had stolen from him.<\/p>\n<p>She convinced Diane that Richard was dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>She convinced Mark that his father had been betrayed.<\/p>\n<p>And when Mark finally discovered she had lied, she was already dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could she control everyone after dying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at Dad&#39;s house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you take the brown folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you touch Dad&#39;s ventilator?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted him to wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was conscious earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad was unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought if the alarm went off, the nurses would come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou silenced it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you want him dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Peter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Peter was dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me to leave you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if I stayed, Peter would use me to get to did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou destroyed my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saved my company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole from Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chair scraped.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t kill Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad said something that made my entire body go cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t come here for the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad asked, \u201cThen what do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter replied:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Richard, standing behind us, whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Evelyn believed your father had hidden something inside noticed something else.<\/p>\n<p>A small symbol in the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Three letters.<\/p>\n<p>E.B.<\/p>\n<p>Richard went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was Evelyn&#39;s mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph again.<\/p>\n<p>My father had kept it for decades.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I understood the final question.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever Evelyn had been searching for, Dad had hidden it somewhere
