him.

“You built a case from forged documents.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because truth is difficult.”

He looked around the trust?”

“No.”

“What?”

Jonathan looked directly at me.

“The truth about Evelyn.”

He explained that Evelyn had been responsible for the first fraudulent transactions, but she had not acted alone.

Someone inside Hail Mechanical had helped her.

That person was Mark's father, Richard.

Richard's face hardened.

“That is a lie.”

Jonathan pulled out a document.

A confession.

Richard read it.

His hands began to back?”

“Because she threatened Mark.”

I looked at Mark through the doorway.

He had been listening.

His eyes filled with tears.

Jonathan continued.

“Walter protected Richard for years.”

“And protected me.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you keep coming after me?”

“Because Walter's final trust agreement contained evidence against Evelyn's entire network.”

“What evidence?”

“A recording.”

I stared at him.

“Where?”

Jonathan smiled.

“Your father gave it to you.”

I shook my head.

“I never received anything.”

“Yes, you did.”

He looked toward my necklace.

My hand instinctively went to my neck.

The gold necklace Dad had given me on my eighteenth birthday.

Jonathan's expression changed.

“Open it.”

I removed the chain.

The pendant had always seemed ordinary.

A small gold oval.

Dad had told me it was a keepsake.

Ortiz examined it.

There was a tiny seam.

She used a tool.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a miniature memory card.

I stared.

Dad had hidden the evidence inside the necklace.

Jonathan's face went pale.

“You weren't supposed to find that.”

Ortiz took it.

“It's over.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

Then the warehouse lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Everyone dropped.

I heard Richard shout.

Then another shot.

When the emergency lights came on, Jonathan was on the floor.

He had been shot in the shoulder.

A man was running toward the rear exit.

Ortiz chased him.

I saw his face for only a second.

Diane.

I froze.

She disappeared through the door.

Richard ran after her.

I followed.

Outside, rain had begun falling.

Diane stopped beside an old truck.

Richard stood several feet away.

“Diane.”

She turned.

“I didn't shoot him.”

“Then why run?”

“Because he'll kill Mark.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“Who?”

Diane looked at me.

“Evelyn.”

I shook my head.

“She is dead.”

Diane nodded.

“I know.”

“Then who is giving you orders?”

She looked toward the warehouse.

“Someone who was there the night Walter died.”

“Who?”

Diane started crying.

“The nurse.”

I froze.

Rachel.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Rachel helped Dad.”

“She helped herself.”

Diane explained that Rachel had been working with Jonathan.

She had altered the medical records.

She had silenced the alarm.

She had helped create the false timeline.

But why?

Because Rachel was Evelyn's granddaughter.

Evelyn had left instructions for her.

And Rachel had followed them.

My mind raced.

The missing incident report.

The twenty-five-thousand-dollar payment.

The false signature.

Rachel had lied.

She hadn't refused the money because she was innocent.

She had returned it because she feared being exposed.

Diane looked at me.

“Rachel was the one who told Jonathan about your father's final conversation.”

I felt sick.

“Did she kill Dad?”

Diane shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Diane looked at Richard.

“Mark.”

I stopped breathing.

Richard stared at her.

“No.”

Diane cried harder.

“Mark didn't mean to.”

I looked back toward the warehouse.

Mark was standing in the doorway.

His face was white.

“I didn't kill him.”

Diane shook her head.

“You caused the chain.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You silenced the alarm.”

“I wanted the nurses to come.”

“You changed the oxygen setting.”

Mark stared at her.

“I didn't.”

“You did.”

I looked at Mark.

“Did you?”

He shook his head.

“I touched the machine, but I didn't change anything.”

Diane turned to me.

“That's the truth.”

“Then what happened?”

She whispered:

“Rachel did.”

The world went silent.

Rachel had been there.

She had access.

She had motive.

And
