Intent comes later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat can we do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sameer looked at Uncle Harish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet the aunt&#39;s visit documented. Preserve the CCTV from the building. And find out where that bracelet came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you identify it?\u201d Uncle Harish asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sameer shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot without the police or the jeweller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Mummy&#39;s bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould we open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot casually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if police later find the bracelet inside, we want a clear record showing who discovered it and when.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore importantly, if your aunt planted it, she may have expected someone to open that bag before your mother came home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo create fingerprints. To create confusion. To make the evidence harder to challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The thought made my stomach turn.<\/p>\n<p>She had thought about everything.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:15, we received the first warning.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy called from work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone from the jewellery exhibition has contacted my manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re asking about a bracelet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one Maasi put in your bag?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cThey haven&#39;t accused me yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey asked whether I had access to the exhibition&#39;s temporary storage records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI handle cash documents, not jewellery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you signed something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed a temporary access sheet last week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uncle Harish and Sameer exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sameer said quietly, \u201cThat&#39;s probably the connection they&#39;re building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat connection?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadam, did anyone ask you to collect or transport documents related to the exhibition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRohit Bedi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sameer looked at Uncle Harish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve seen him around the store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he ask you to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me to carry an envelope from the exhibition office to the accounts department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it wasn&#39;t sealed properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That detail seemed important.<\/p>\n<p>Sameer asked, \u201cDid you tell anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told my manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoonam was she angry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause children shouldn&#39;t have to choose between relatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not choosing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her purse and pulled out an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed three people.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy.<\/p>\n<p>Poonam.<\/p>\n<p>And their father.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen it before, but never closely.<\/p>\n<p>On the back was a date.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The year I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather left something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bank locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyebrows drew together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why haven&#39;t you opened it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he told me not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said the contents were connected to your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a strange chill.<\/p>\n<p>I had grown up believing my father had died before I was born.<\/p>\n<p>There was one framed photograph of him in our living room, but I had never been allowed to ask many questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s his name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy&#39;s lips parted.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Three hard knocks.<\/p>\n<p>Uncle Harish stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Sameer motioned for us to remain seated.<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice came from outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy went pale.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed her hand.<\/p>\n<p>The officer entered with two constables.<\/p>\n<p>He introduced himself as Inspector Mehta.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes went directly to the office bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Meera Sharma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have information regarding stolen property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy&#39;s fingers tightened around mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have any stolen property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll determine that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector asked her to step aside.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at the bag.<\/p>\n<p>My aunt&#39;s plan was beginning to
