Uncle Harish moved in front of me, while Mummy stood frozen beside the open locker.<\/p>\n<p>Then the door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped inside.<\/p>\n<p>He was thinner than the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>His hair was streaked with gray, his jaw sharper, and a pale scar ran from beneath his left ear toward his collar. He wore a dark jacket and held his hands where everyone could see them.<\/p>\n<p>But his eyes were the same.<\/p>\n<p>I knew them immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I remembered them.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had seen them in the photograph so many times that some part of me had memorized them.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy whispered one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArjun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, neither moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cMeera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her knees almost gave way.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed her arm.<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled, but the smile broke before it fully formed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKavya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen years of questions crowded into one impossible moment.<\/p>\n<p>Where had you been?<\/p>\n<p>Why didn&#39;t you come back?<\/p>\n<p>Why did everyone say you were dead?<\/p>\n<p>Why did you let me grow up without you?<\/p>\n<p>But the only thing that came out was, \u201cAre you really my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took one step toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Inspector Mehta immediately moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not here to hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re going to explain who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlowly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he reached inside his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>The inspector&#39;s hand moved toward his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Arjun froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have something for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake it out slowly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed a small wooden box and placed it on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told to give this to Kavya if I ever saw her again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy stared at the box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector crouched and examined the box without touching it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething that belongs to Meera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve been alive all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew I thought you were dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew our daughter believed you were dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you come home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause every time I tried, someone disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room fell silent.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that after the night his scooter was found, he had been taken to an abandoned warehouse outside the city. He had been beaten and threatened, but before they could force him to reveal where he had hidden the records, someone helped him escape.<\/p>\n<p>He spent months moving between safe houses.<\/p>\n<p>When he finally tried contacting Meera, he saw two men watching her family&#39;s house.<\/p>\n<p>He stayed away.<\/p>\n<p>Years passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then the people behind the scheme began using the same network again.<\/p>\n<p>That was when he returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw Poonam meeting Rohit Bedi three weeks ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoonam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I didn&#39;t know whether she was working for him willingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe planted the bracelet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I watched her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector&#39;s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were watching the family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was watching the people threatening them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that he had been tracking Rohit Bedi for months. The old fraud scheme had never disappeared. It had simply become more sophisticated.<\/p>\n<p>The missing jewellery claims were used to move money.<\/p>\n<p>False theft accusations were used to pressure employees.<\/p>\n<p>And people who discovered the financial trail were discredited before they could speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father found the first records,\u201d Arjun said. \u201cI found the second set.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the pen drives on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is something you don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector asked, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe encrypted drive isn&#39;t the final evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sameer frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s a map.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKavya knows the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather used to tell you a story about a red bicycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind went blank.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>When I was little, Grandpa used to tell me that whenever I was frightened, I should imagine myself riding a red bicycle down a road with seven trees.<\/p>\n<p>It had always sounded like a silly childhood story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven trees,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Arjun nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storage unit is behind the old nursery on Seven Trees Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector immediately asked for the address.<\/p>\n<p>Arjun gave it.<\/p>\n<p>Sameer began writing.<\/p>\n<p>But before anyone could move, Arjun said, \u201cThere is another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storage unit has been opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector looked toward the encrypted drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why bring us here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the person who opened it left something behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun reached into his jacket again.<\/p>\n<p>This time he produced a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a woman standing outside the storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>Poonam.<\/p>\n<p>Beside her stood Rohit Bedi.<\/p>\n<p>But there was someone else in the picture.<\/p>\n<p>A man whose face was partly hidden.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>The inspector enlarged the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mummy whispered the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVikram.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had heard it once before.<\/p>\n<p>Vikram was my grandfather&#39;s younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>He had supposedly died years ago.<\/p>\n<p>But the man in the photograph was alive.<\/p>\n<p>And he was looking directly at the camera.<\/p>\n<p>The inspector asked Arjun where he had gotten the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Poonam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t know I have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy looked at her brother-in-law&#39;s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVikram died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what everyone was told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector immediately made a call.<\/p>\n<p>I watched my father.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me again.<\/p>\n<p>There was sadness in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to meet you differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was afraid that if I came home, they would use you against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have written.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mummy looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never received them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause someone intercepted them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he looked at the old photograph in Mummy&#39;s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour family has been protecting the wrong secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going to Seven Trees Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll lead you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d the inspector said. \u201cYou&#39;re staying with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arjun didn&#39;t argue.<\/p>\n<p>As we left the bank, I walked beside him.<\/p>\n<p>For thirteen years, I had imagined what it would feel like to meet my father.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined running into his arms.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined crying.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I felt strangely empty.<\/p>\n<p>He was alive.<\/p>\n<p>That should have been enough.<\/p>\n<p>But being alive wasn&#39;t the same as being my father.<\/p>\n<p>Trust would take longer.<\/p>\n<p>Much longer.<\/p>\n<p>And as we reached the street, Arjun leaned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one thing I need you to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bracelet was never meant to destroy only your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was meant to force me out of hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could respond, Inspector Mehta&#39;s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storage unit is on
