Behind her stood a man in a charcoal suit holding a leather folder. I recognized him vaguely from somewhere, but I could not place his face. Rain tapped against the windows, and the old refrigerator hummed behind me.

I looked from Clare to the folder.

Then I looked at the photograph of our parents hanging above the sink.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

“Packing for what?” I asked.

Clare gave me a small smile.

“The ranch isn’t yours anymore.”

My name is Jacob. I was twenty-nine when my parents died, and at the time I thought losing them would be the hardest thing I would ever experience.

I was wrong.

The ranch had been in our family for three generations. Eighty acres of rolling pasture, wooded hills, a weathered farmhouse, several barns, horse stalls, fencing that seemed to disappear into the horizon, and a long gravel drive lined with cottonwoods.

A real-estate agent later estimated the entire property at roughly $1.2 million.

I never thought of it that way.

To me, it was where Dad taught me to ride.

It was where Mom planted tomatoes behind the kitchen.

It was where I learned to repair a broken fence before I was old enough to drive.

The property had marks everywhere that reminded me of them. A scratch on the barn door from one of Dad’s old tools. A faded blue line on the kitchen wall showing how tall I had been at twelve. A dent in the porch railing where Mom once dropped a cast-iron flowerpot.

After their deaths, I stayed because I did not know how to leave.

Clare had always been different.

She was three years older, a lawyer, and comfortable in places where I often felt out of place. She had moved to the city years earlier and built a career there. Her clothes were always pressed. Her phone was always in her hand. She spoke quickly when she was confident and even faster when she wanted something.

I stayed with Dad.

When his health began to decline, I took over more of the daily work. I fed the horses, repaired fences, dealt with contractors, paid bills, handled equipment problems, and kept the property running.

I did not consider any of that extraordinary.

It was simply what needed to be done.

So when our parents’ will was read and the ranch was left to me, I was surprised by how little joy I felt.

I remember sitting at the attorney’s conference table while Clare listened.

The lawyer read the relevant section slowly.

The ranch was to pass to me.

Other assets were distributed separately.

Clare received her portion.

There was no ambiguity in the language.

Afterward, she hugged me.

“Congratulations,” she said.

Her arms were around me, but her voice was strangely flat.

“Thanks.”

She stepped back and smiled.

“You certainly got the golden ticket.”

I laughed because I assumed she was trying to make a difficult moment lighter.

I did not realize that sentence would stay with me.

A few weeks later, we had dinner at the ranch.

Clare looked around the farmhouse while we ate.

“You know,” she said, “this place is worth a fortune now.”

“I know.”

“You could sell the back acreage.”

“I’m not selling.”

“You could build cabins.”

“I’m not building cabins either.”

She leaned back.

“You really want to keep doing all this yourself?”

“It’s what Dad did.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s my answer.”

She smiled, but there was something behind it.

Then she said, “Well, at least you’ll always have somewhere to live.”

Our aunt laughed.

I didn't.

Clare noticed.

For a moment, her smile vanished.

Then she changed the subject.

I told myself I was imagining things.

Grief makes people strange.

That was what I kept thinking.

But Clare started coming to the ranch more often.

At first, she said she wanted to check on me.

Then she began suggesting renovations.

“This room could be opened up.”

“The kitchen needs new cabinets.”

“The barn could be converted.”

One afternoon, she arrived with her fiancé, Daniel.

He walked around the property with his hands in his coat pockets, examining everything.

Clare pointed toward the eastern side of the house.

“We could put a nursery there.”

I looked at her.

“You planning on moving in?”

She laughed.

“Not tomorrow.”

Daniel smiled.

“But it would be nice.”

I looked toward the pasture.

Something about the conversation made my stomach tighten.

They were speaking about my parents’ home as though they were already deciding where their furniture would go.

Two weeks later, Clare came back carrying a thick stack of papers.

She put them on the kitchen table.

“Just some estate cleanup,” she said.

I pulled out a chair.

“What kind of cleanup?”

“Nothing dramatic.”

That answer bothered me more than if she had simply explained.

I started reading.

There were references to transfers, ownership interests, title adjustments, and other legal language I did not fully understand.

I turned several pages.

“Why does this say transfer?”

Clare waved her hand.

“It’s standard.”

“Transfer of what?”

“The paperwork is complicated because of the estate.”

I looked at her.

“You’re a lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“So explain it.”

Her expression hardened slightly.

“Jacob, I am explaining it.
