She did not behave like someone hiding an affair. Nathan says she\u2019s nice, just&#8230;comfortable. You know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, something cold was spreading through me.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly two years, Nathan had been telling me our finances were collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>The roofing company was struggling.<\/p>\n<p>Customers were paying late.<\/p>\n<p>Equipment costs had risen.<\/p>\n<p>Taxes were eating everything.<\/p>\n<p>He had told me more than once that if I could bring in a little extra money, it would help us get through the rough period.<\/p>\n<p>So I had.<\/p>\n<p>I took more clients at the salon.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped replacing clothes that had become worn.<\/p>\n<p>I put off a medical appointment because the copay seemed unnecessary when we were supposedly fighting to keep the business alive.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring, I even began cleaning a dentist\u2019s office on Saturday mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan had called it temporary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery little bit matters, Becca,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>That was what made Lauren\u2019s next words so difficult to hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe keeps saying he\u2019s going to get out soon,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced at herself in the mirror and touched one of the foil strips near her temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says the divorce will be easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause his wife thinks they have nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scissors in my hand stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t know what they actually own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do they own?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lauren shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot more than she thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are moments when your life divides itself into before and after.<\/p>\n<p>That was one of mine.<\/p>\n<p>Before that Thursday, I believed my husband was a difficult man under financial pressure.<\/p>\n<p>After it, I began wondering whether every hardship he had described to me had been carefully manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren continued talking because she had no reason not to.<\/p>\n<p>She told me about dinners at expensive restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Weekend trips.<\/p>\n<p>A condo Nathan had helped arrange.<\/p>\n<p>A boat.<\/p>\n<p>Jewelry.<\/p>\n<p>Things that did not belong in the life of a man who supposedly worried about whether we could afford routine household expenses.<\/p>\n<p>I listened without reacting.<\/p>\n<p>Then she mentioned another woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeredith Shaw still handles some of Nathan\u2019s books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used to work with him full-time. He says there\u2019s around four hundred thousand sitting where his wife doesn\u2019t know to look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour hundred thousand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he\u2019s moving some liabilities before he files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat liabilities?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEquipment loans. Taxes. Personal guarantees. Things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried to keep my breathing even.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lauren looked at me through the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis wife\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed suddenly too small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would she agree to that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lauren gave a strange little smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan signs things for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands went numb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he knows her signature better than she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of every document Nathan had ever placed in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance forms.<\/p>\n<p>Bank papers.<\/p>\n<p>Business documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust sign here, Becca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need this for the accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t worry about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For twenty-six years, I had trusted the man whose handwriting I knew better than my own.<\/p>\n<p>Now another woman was telling me he had been signing my name.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren\u2019s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>She glanced down.<\/p>\n<p>Her face brightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the message.<\/p>\n<p>Then she laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants me to ask if you can notarize something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved to the notary certificate hanging beside my mirror.<\/p>\n<p>I had been a commissioned notary for eleven years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransfer papers.
