The major accounts had been separated. The properties had been traced. The debts he had tried to place on me had been challenged and, where appropriate, removed. My home was safe. My salon was still mine.

I had learned to sleep without listening for the garage door.

I had learned that silence in a house could be peaceful.

Then the letter arrived.

It came on an ordinary Tuesday morning, mixed among utility bills, advertisements, and a birthday card from one of my clients.

The envelope carried Nathan's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

For several seconds, I simply held it.

I considered throwing it away unopened.

Instead, I placed it on the kitchen table and made coffee.

The letter stayed there until the coffee was cold.

Finally, I opened it.

The first paragraph was exactly what I expected.

He apologized.

He said prison had given him time to think.

He said he regretted destroying our marriage.

He said he wished he could go back.

Then I reached the fourth paragraph.

Nathan wrote that there was something he had never told me because he had been afraid of what would happen if I knew.

I stopped reading.

My hand tightened around the paper.

He wrote that Andrew had not been the only person who knew about Stonebridge.

There had been another file.

Another set of records.

And Nathan claimed those records had never been found.

I read the sentence twice.

Then I called Camille.

She arrived that afternoon.

She read the letter without expression.

“Do you believe him?”

“No.”

“Neither do I.”

I handed her the pages.

“But if he's lying, he's lying about something specific.”

She nodded.

That was what bothered me.

Nathan had spent years constructing stories that sounded plausible.

This one was different.

He mentioned a storage facility outside town.

He gave an address.

He said that before Andrew died, another set of financial records had been moved there.

He claimed Meredith knew about it.

Then came the sentence that made my stomach turn.

Nathan wrote that the records contained proof that some of the assets he had moved had originally belonged to me.

I looked at Camille.

“What does that mean?”

“It could mean nothing.”

“Or?”

“It could mean there are assets you never recovered.”

The thought disturbed me.

Not because I wanted more money.

I had already spent enough years thinking about money.

It disturbed me because it meant Nathan's final version of the truth might still contain another lie.

We contacted the authorities.

They were reluctant to reopen anything without a reason.

Nathan was already serving his sentence.

The major financial matters had been resolved.

But the storage facility existed.

So we went.

The manager led us through a row of metal doors until we reached one bearing the number Nathan had written.

The unit was registered under a company I had never heard of.

Camille looked at me.

“Does that name mean anything?”

“No.”

The lock was old.

Authorities opened it.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Most were empty.

Some contained business invoices.

Then we found a metal filing cabinet.

Inside were folders marked with dates.

One folder carried Andrew's handwriting.

I felt my chest tighten.

Camille opened it.

The first page was a photocopy of a document from thirteen years earlier.

The second was a property deed.

The third was a bank statement.

Then came a handwritten note.

Andrew had written:

Nathan says these properties were purchased with business money. They were not.

Camille looked at me.

I read the next line.

He used money from Rebecca's inheritance.

I stopped breathing.

“My inheritance?”

Camille nodded slowly.

I had received an inheritance from my mother after she died.

Nathan had told me the money was used to pay off debts.

I remembered it clearly.

He had said the roofing company was about to collapse.

He said if I put the inheritance into the business, we would save everything.

I had believed him.

The amount had been significant.

Not enough to make me wealthy.

Enough to matter.

I had never asked for repayment.

I had considered it part of our marriage.

Now Andrew's records suggested the money had been used to acquire property.

Property that Nathan had later placed into Stonebridge.

I sat down on the concrete floor.

All those years.

The first hidden asset had been purchased with money that had belonged to me before Nathan ever touched it.

Camille kept reading.

There was more.

Andrew had traced the transfers.

He had written down account numbers.

Property addresses.

Dates.

And beside several transactions, one word appeared repeatedly.

REBECCA.

Not as an owner.

As the source of funds.

I felt anger rise in me.

Not the explosive kind.

Something colder.

Something that settled into certainty.

Nathan had not simply stolen from our marriage.

He had taken something that was mine and built his secret world with it.

The storage unit also contained photographs.

One showed Nathan standing beside a warehouse I recognized from the property records.

Another showed Meredith.

A third showed Andrew with a folder in his hand.

On the back, Andrew had written the date.

The photograph had been taken three months before his death.

Camille studied it.

“Why would he keep this?”

I touched the edge.

“Because he knew.”

She nodded.

There was one final envelope.

My name was written on it.

Rebecca.

No last name.

No address.

Just Rebecca.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter from Andrew.

It was unfinished.

He had begun writing:

Becca, if you're reading this, then something happened that prevented me from telling you everything myself.

My eyes blurred.

I continued.

Nathan is not telling you the truth about the money.

I stopped.

Camille remained silent.

The next sentence was underlined.

Do not let him convince you that because you are married, everything automatically belongs to both of you.

I pressed my palm against my mouth.

Andrew had understood.

He had known exactly what Nathan was doing.

The letter ended abruptly.

There was no explanation of what happened next.

No conclusion.

Just a final sentence.

If I don't get the chance to explain, trust the records, not Nathan.

I folded the paper.

For the first time since Andrew died, I felt as though my brother had spoken directly to me.

Not from a photograph.

Not from memory.

From a box he had hidden because he believed someday I might need it.

We spent the next several weeks tracing the properties.

Two were still held by companies connected to Nathan.

One had been sold.

Another had been transferred to Meredith shortly before the investigation began.

That transfer became important.

Because the money used to buy it could be traced back to my inheritance.

The property was worth far more than the original amount.

Camille told me we could pursue it.

I stared at the paperwork.

“I don't want revenge.”

“This isn't revenge.”

“What is it?”

“Recovery.”

That word stayed with me.

Recovery.

Not punishment.

Not revenge.

Recovery.

For years, Nathan had made me believe that asking for what was mine was selfish.

Now I understood how convenient that belief had been for him.

I signed the necessary legal documents.

Not blindly.

Not because someone told me where to sign.

I read every page.

I asked questions.

I requested explanations.

Then I signed.

My signature was mine again.

And for the first time, I understood what Andrew had been trying to protect.

Not just money.

My ability to decide what happened to my own life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Property Bought With My
