I still woke before sunrise, still made coffee strong enough to stand a spoon in, and still checked my work calendar before breakfast. The difference was that no one else's financial emergency was waiting beneath the day's first notification.

On a gray Saturday morning, I was standing in my kitchen slicing an apple when someone knocked on the front door. I expected Patricia. She had mentioned stopping by with some documents, and I had not heard the car pull into the driveway. When I opened the door, Ashley was standing there alone.

She looked different.

Not transformed. Not suddenly mature. Just less certain of herself than the last time I had seen her. Her hair was pulled back, her coat was damp from the drizzle, and she held a small paper bag in both hands as though she needed something physical to keep herself from leaving.

“Can I come in?” she asked.

I hesitated.

She noticed.

“I understand if the answer is no.”

I stepped aside.

She entered quietly.

For a moment, neither of us knew where to stand. The house was small enough that silence felt larger than it should have. She looked around at the shelves, the photographs, the little dining table near the window.

“This place is nice,” she said.

“Thank you.”

She nodded.

“I brought something.”

She handed me the paper bag.

Inside was a small ceramic mug.

It was blue with a thin white line around the rim.

I recognized it immediately.

It had been mine.

I had left it in the old house.

“Why do you have this?”

“Dad packed it by mistake.”

She looked down.

“I thought you might want it.”

I held the mug in my hands.

It was nothing important.

That was why it mattered.

“Thank you,” I said.

She nodded.

Then she took a breath.

“I came to apologize.”

I didn't answer immediately.

She sat on the edge of the chair.

“I know you've heard that before.”

“Not from you.”

“I should have said it sooner.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes lifted.

“I know.”

She looked toward the window.

“I thought you didn't like me.”

I sat across from her.

“Why?”

“Because Dad said you were always frustrated about helping me. thought about it.

“I care about the person I thought he was.”

She nodded slowly.

“That's different.”

“Yes.”

She opened the door.

Then stopped.

“Diane?”

“Yes?”

“I'm sorry I called you the help.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

She left.

I closed the door.

The apology did not repair anything.

But it placed one honest brick where there had previously been a lie.

Two weeks later, Patricia called me.

“You need to sit down.”

“I am sitting.”

“Good.”

She sounded serious.

“Greg contacted me.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he want?”

“He says he wants to meet with you.”

“No.”

“I thought you'd say that.”

“What did he say?”

“He says he has something you need to know.”

I looked toward the blue mug on the counter.

“What?”

“He wouldn't tell me.”

I was silent.

Patricia continued.

“Diane, I don't think you should meet him alone.”

“I don't plan to.”

That evening, I received an email from Greg.

He said he had made mistakes.

He said he understood that apologies could not undo them.

Then he wrote one sentence that made me stop reading.

There is one thing Ashley does not know, and I think she deserves the truth.

I read the sentence twice.

Then I looked at the calendar.

The divorce was finished.

The accounts were separated.

The house was mine.

The marriage was over.

Whatever remained should have belonged in the past.

But I had learned something about the past.

It doesn't always stay there simply because you stop living with the person who created it.

I closed the laptop.

For the first time since the divorce, I wondered whether the story I had uncovered had another chapter.

<a
