Inside lay a small digital voice recorder, a folded note, and a photograph of my father standing beside a woman I recognized only after studying her face for several seconds.

The woman was younger in the photograph, perhaps in her thirties. She stood near the entrance of my father's old office, her expression serious, one hand resting on a wooden desk. My father had written a date on the back, followed by a sentence that made my stomach tighten.

If Julian ever begins making decisions for you, remember that the truth is not always where the paperwork says it is.

I read the sentence twice.

My father had never liked Julian, but he had never told me that he suspected my husband of anything criminal. If he had uncovered something, why had he kept it from me? Why had he entrusted a stranger with a recorder rather than leaving the information in his will?

I turned the device over. It was an ordinary model, small enough to disappear inside a pocket. A strip of masking tape covered its side, and my father's initials were written across it.

The recorder had no obvious label explaining what it contained.

I pressed the power button, but the display remained dark. The battery was dead.

For one irrational moment, I wanted to throw it against the wall. My life might be measured in days, and my father's final warning had arrived without an explanation.

Then I unfolded the note.

Clara, if you are reading this, someone has convinced you that you no longer have the time or strength to protect yourself. Do not confuse exhaustion with helplessness. Find the person who understands why I kept the original records separate from the copies. Ask what happened to the land account. Trust evidence, not promises.

The message ended with his signature.

I lowered the paper onto my blanket.

The land account.

My father had owned several parcels of agricultural land before expanding into commercial property. After his death, the estate had been reorganized under legal supervision. I remembered Julian becoming unusually interested in the transfer documents, insisting that he could simplify the process and reduce the administrative burden.

At the time, I had welcomed his help.

Now, I wondered whether he had been looking for something specific.

A shadow passed across the doorway. I shoved the note and recorder beneath the pillow just before Julian entered.

He carried a bouquet of white roses and a paper bag from the expensive bakery near the hospital. He looked every inch the devoted husband, his tie loosened slightly and his expression arranged into an appropriate mixture of worry and tenderness.

“How are you feeling, sweetheart?”

I watched him place the flowers in a vase.

“Worse.”

He paused, then resumed arranging the stems.

“The doctors are doing everything they can.”

“Are they?”

He turned toward me.

“Of course.”

I wanted to ask whether he had been poisoning me. The question rose into my throat, but I swallowed it. I had no laboratory results, no recording of his admissions, and no reliable witness who could explain what was happening.

If he suspected that I was beginning to understand, he might take the envelope away.

Instead, I asked him about the estate.

His expression changed so slightly that another person might have missed it.

“What about it?”

“Who is managing the properties while I'm here?”

“I am, naturally. Someone has to keep things running.”

“Did my father leave any instructions about the land?”

Julian drew a chair beside my bed.

“Clara, you shouldn't be worrying about paperwork now.”

“I asked you a question.”

He sighed, as though my stubbornness saddened him.

“Your father's arrangements were complicated. I've been speaking with the estate advisers to make sure everything remains protected.”

“Protected from what?”

“From unnecessary expenses. From people taking advantage of your situation.”

He reached for my hand, but I moved it toward the blanket before he could touch it.

His eyes lingered on the movement.

“Are you angry with me?”

“No. I'm tired.”

“Then rest.”

He kissed my forehead and stayed another ten minutes, talking about the weather and the possibility of bringing some of my belongings from home. Before leaving, he reminded me that the lawyers might need a few signatures.

“Nothing complicated,” he said. “Just routine authorizations.”

I closed my eyes.

After he left, I called for the nurse.

I described the unfamiliar woman, the gray in her hair, and the envelope she had delivered. The nurse listened carefully but said the hospital employed temporary staff who sometimes covered shifts across several departments.

She promised to make inquiries.

She did not return with an answer.

The following morning, Julian arrived with a woman named Victoria Blake.

I recognized her from a charity gala in Manhattan several months earlier. She had stood with Julian near the balcony doors, laughing at something he had said. When I approached them, she had stepped away quickly enough that I had assumed she was embarrassed to have interrupted a private conversation.

Julian had introduced her as a consultant who occasionally helped with property transactions.

Now she wore a pale cashmere coat over a tailored dress and carried a leather folder filled with documents.

“Clara,” she said warmly, “I'm so sorry you're going through this.”

She took my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. Her sympathy seemed practiced, but I could not tell whether that impression came from the circumstances or from something she was trying to conceal.

Julian placed the folder on the tray table.

“Victoria is helping me organize a few things. Some invoices need approval, and the property managers require temporary authority to handle urgent decisions.”

Victoria opened the folder.

“It's entirely administrative,” she explained. “You won't need to worry about any of it once you've signed.”

I looked at the first page.

Temporary Estate Power of Attorney.

The title was printed in bold letters above a series of paragraphs that blurred slightly when I tried to read them. I asked Julian to explain exactly what the document would allow him to do.

“Pay bills, authorize repairs, deal with tenants, and handle ordinary matters,” he replied. “Nothing that affects your ownership.”

“Does it allow you to sell the land?”

He hesitated.

“Not without additional paperwork.”

“Does it allow you to move money between accounts?”

“Clara, we can discuss the details with the lawyer.”

“Then why do you need my signature today?”

Victoria glanced at him.

“Because the property managers are waiting,” she said quickly. “And there are deadlines.”

I picked up the pen Julian offered me.

My hand felt heavy, and the movement exhausted me. I placed the pen on the signature line and dragged it across the paper.

No ink appeared.

Julian took it from me, shook it, and handed it back.

I tried again.

Nothing.

“I'll find another pen,” Victoria offered.

“No,” Julian said abruptly.

The word came out sharper than he intended. He reached inside his jacket and produced a fountain pen.

Before he could place it in my hand, the door opened.

A hospital orderly stood in the doorway with a clipboard.

“Ms. Whitmore needs to go to radiology.”

Julian frowned.

“We're in the middle of something.”

“The scan has already been scheduled.”

“Cancel it.”

The orderly glanced at the clipboard.

“Dr. Cho requested the examination.”

Julian's face hardened.

“Who authorized that?”

“The patient requested a second opinion.”

His eyes moved toward me.

I closed mine and let my head sink into the pillow.

Earlier that morning, while a nurse helped me wash, I had whispered that I needed to see a doctor who was not connected to my husband's treatment decisions. I had been frightened that she would dismiss me as confused, but she had taken my request seriously.

Now, someone was coming to examine me.

Julian stepped aside, but his expression promised that the conversation was not over.

As the orderly prepared to take me downstairs, I felt the envelope pressing against my pillow beneath the folded blanket.

My father's warning had begun to make sense.

Julian wasn't merely waiting for me to die. He was trying to make sure that, before I did, I signed away the authority to protect what I owned.

And whatever he feared I might discover, he was running out of patience.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Second Doctor Asked One Question My Husband Could Not Afford to Let Me Answer Honestly

I waited until the footsteps outside my room had faded before opening the envelope.
