She reviewed my chart, checked the notes from my previous examinations, and asked several questions about my symptoms.

Julian followed us into the room.

“My wife has been confused lately,” he explained. “She sometimes misunderstands things, especially when she's tired.”

Dr. Cho did not look at him.

“Mr. Whitmore, I'd like to speak with your wife alone.”

“I'm her husband.”

“And I'm the physician conducting this examination.”

He folded his arms.

“I have every right to be here.”

Dr. Cho finally turned toward me.

“Clara, would you like your husband to stay?”

“No.”

The word surprised even me. It came out clearly, without the hesitation that had plagued my speech for days.

Julian stared at me.

For a moment, his expression looked less like anger than disbelief. Then he straightened his jacket and walked out, closing the door harder than necessary.

Dr. Cho waited until his footsteps disappeared.

“Do you feel safe with your husband?”

I looked down at my hands.

“No.”

She pulled her chair closer.

“Has he threatened you?”

“Not directly.”

“Has he done anything that makes you believe he might be deliberately harming you?”

I told her about the herbal drink.

I described its bitter taste, the metallic aftertaste, and the timing of my worsening symptoms. I explained that Julian had insisted on preparing it himself and that I had grown seriously ill after months of drinking it.

I also told her about the doctor's prediction and the way Julian had immediately begun discussing legal arrangements.

Dr. Cho listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she asked whether I had any reason to believe my medication had been changed without my knowledge.

“I don't know,” I admitted. “I haven't been able to keep track of everything.”

She made several notes.

“I'm ordering a comprehensive toxicology assessment. I also want the medication records reviewed independently. Until we know more, don't consume anything brought in by visitors unless the staff can verify what it is.”

I felt a faint loosening in my chest.

For nine months, people had told me that my symptoms were mysterious, my anxiety understandable, and my exhaustion expected. Dr. Cho was the first person who seemed willing to investigate the possibility that something was being done to me.

She also arranged for hospital security to restrict my visitor access according to my wishes.

“Your husband doesn't get to make every decision simply because you're married,” she told me. “You are still the patient, and your consent matters.”

I wanted to believe that the danger had finally been recognized.

Three hours later, Dr. Vance entered my room carrying my medical chart.

He looked furious.

“Dr. Cho has interfered with an established treatment plan,” he announced. “Her orders are being reviewed.”

“Why?”

“Because she has no reason to question the conclusions reached by your medical team.”

“Then why are you afraid of another examination?”

He stopped speaking.

The silence lasted only a second, but I saw his eyes flick toward the doorway.

“Your condition is serious, Clara. You need calm, not unnecessary distress.”

He explained that my latest results showed worsening organ function and insisted that nothing justified changing the existing treatment plan. He said the second opinion had created confusion and that the hospital needed to maintain a consistent approach.

I asked him to show me the test results.

He closed the chart.

“You're not well enough to interpret them.”

The answer frightened me more than the prognosis.

When he left, Julian entered almost immediately.

He sat beside me and brushed my hair away from my face with a tenderness that now felt like a threat.

“You've worked yourself into a panic,” he said. “You need to stop imagining things.”

“Did you tell Dr. Vance to change my medication?”

His hand became still.

“Of course not.”

“Did you give me something that made me sick?”

“Clara, listen to yourself.”

He looked toward the corridor, then leaned closer.

“You're exhausted. You can barely remember what day it is. I understand that you're frightened, but you cannot accuse people of terrible things simply because you're dying.”

The final word landed between us.

I watched him for a long moment.

“Are you sad that I'm dying?”

His face changed. He seemed genuinely offended.

“What kind of question is that?”

“An ordinary one.”

He took my hand and pressed it against his cheek.

“Of course I'm sad.”

But his skin felt cool against my palm, and his eyes remained dry.

I let him believe I accepted his answer.

That evening, he placed his phone on the windowsill and called Victoria. He spoke quietly, apparently convinced that I was asleep.

“The east wing will need a complete renovation,” he said.

I kept my breathing slow.

Victoria's voice was too faint for me to understand, but Julian answered with a short laugh.

“No, she isn't coming home.”

My fingers curled beneath the blanket.

He listened again.

“You can bring your things over after the family has left following the memorial.”

The room seemed to tilt.

He was discussing my death as if it were a date on a calendar. He had already imagined the house without me, the rooms rearranged, and another woman occupying the space where my life had been.

“I know you've waited a long time,” he told Victoria. “So have I.”

He ended the call and walked back toward my bed.

I opened my eyes.

For an instant, he looked startled.

Then the familiar smile returned.

“Bad dream?”

“Victoria.”

His expression tightened around the mouth.

“She is helping me with the estate.”

“Do you love her?”

He glanced toward the doorway.

“That's not a useful question right now.”

“So you do.”

“Clara, what difference does it make?”

I studied the man I had married. I remembered the first apartment we had shared, the dinner parties, the quiet mornings when he had brought coffee to my desk. I wondered which memories had been real and which had been performances designed to keep me trusting him.

Then he picked up my water cup.

“You need to drink.”

I turned my face away.

“I'm not thirsty.”

He pressed the straw against my lips.

“Drink it.”

I kept my mouth closed.

His patience disappeared.

“Stop being difficult.”

He seized my jaw and tried to force my mouth open. Pain shot through my face, and I struggled to pull away.

The door swung open.

The unfamiliar nurse from the previous night entered the room.

Julian released me immediately.

“She refuses to drink,” he said, smoothing his expression into concern. “I've been trying to keep her hydrated.”

The nurse took the cup from him.

“I'll take care of her.”

Julian looked at the identification badge clipped to her uniform.

“Evelyn Hayes. I haven't seen you working on this floor.”

“I cover different departments.”

“Dr. Vance is supervising my wife's treatment.”

“I'm aware.”

They regarded each other for several tense seconds. Then Julian picked up his jacket.

“I'll return tomorrow morning.”

He left without saying goodbye to me.

The instant the door closed, Evelyn locked it. She checked the corridor through the narrow window and drew the privacy curtain across the glass.

Then she went straight to my bed and reached beneath the mattress.

She pulled out the small digital recorder.

My breath caught.

“You used it,” she said.

I stared at her.

“Who are you?”

Evelyn slipped the recorder into her pocket.

“There isn't enough time to explain everything yet.”

“Then explain why you're helping me.”

She looked down at me, and for the first time I noticed something beyond her guarded expression. There was grief there, old and carefully contained.

“Your father believed this day might come,” she said.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he made arrangements to protect you if someone tried to take control of your life while you were unable to defend yourself.”

I struggled to sit upright.

“Is Julian trying to kill me?”

Evelyn did not answer directly.

“Your father didn't trust him. We need to establish what happened to you and preserve the evidence properly.”

My hands trembled.

“I may not have another day.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

“You will have a chance to tell your story, Clara. I promise you that.”

I wanted to believe her, but there was one question I could no longer keep inside.

“Why did my father choose you?”

She looked at me for several seconds before answering.

“Because your grandson looks exactly like my son.”

The words made no sense.

I had no grandson.

At least, none that I knew about.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Woman Who Knew My Father Revealed a Family Connection That Made My Husband’s Secrets Even More Dangerous

Dr. Cho was waiting in a small examination room when the orderly wheeled me inside.
