Not another branch of the family. Nothing.”

“Your father was protecting someone.”

“Who?”

“That's what we need to establish before I tell you more.”

I almost laughed. The sound would have hurt too much, so I swallowed it.

Everyone seemed to know something about my life except me. My husband knew which documents he wanted signed. Dr. Vance knew why he insisted on controlling my treatment. Victoria knew where she expected to live after my funeral. And now a nurse I had never met was telling me that my father had concealed a family connection.

“What did you mean when you said my husband believed I was dying?” I asked. “Why were you instructed to wait for this moment?”

Evelyn glanced at the door.

“Arthur understood that certain people behave differently when they think there is nothing left to lose. He wanted the evidence delivered when you would be able to recognize the danger for yourself.”

“Did he know Julian would do this?”

“He suspected that Julian was hiding something. He didn't have proof of everything, and he couldn't predict precisely what would happen. But he was worried enough to make preparations.”

I looked down at the blanket.

My father had been gone for three years. I remembered the last time we spoke, when he sat beside the window in his study and watched the gardeners trimming the hedges. He had been quieter than usual, but I had attributed it to age and the strain of managing his affairs.

He had asked whether I was happy with Julian.

I had said yes.

He had looked at me for a long time before replying, “I hope you always feel safe enough to tell yourself the truth.”

I had thought it was simply a father's way of expressing concern.

Now, the memory felt like a message I had failed to understand.

“Did you know him well?” I asked Evelyn.

“Well enough to know that he didn't make decisions without considering the consequences.”

“Then tell me what he found.”

“I will, but first I need you to understand something. The recorder isn't the only evidence. There are documents, financial records, and copies of communications that your father arranged to preserve. Some are connected to the land account you mentioned in his note.”

I stared at her.

“How do you know about that?”

“Because I helped him organize the material.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He believed you would dismiss his concerns if he presented them without proof. He also worried that anyone who knew what he had discovered might become a target.”

The answer hurt because it sounded like my father. He had always been cautious, sometimes to the point of frustrating the people around him. He believed that a person should prepare for a problem long before it became visible.

But he had also known how much I loved Julian.

Perhaps he had feared that I would choose my husband over the evidence.

I looked toward the door.

“Can I trust you?”

Evelyn did not immediately answer.

“No,” she said at last. “Not simply because I tell you to. You should verify everything I say. Your father would have wanted that.”

Her honesty unsettled me more than a comforting promise would have.

She took a small battery pack from her pocket and connected it to the recorder. The display flickered, then illuminated. She checked the device without playing anything.

“Did Julian know you were recording him?” I asked.

“I don't believe so.”

“Then what did you capture?”

“Conversations that may be important. We need to make sure they remain intact and that no one can accuse you of altering them.”

She explained that she intended to transfer the files to a secure device and make copies through a proper evidentiary process. I did not understand every technical detail, but I understood the reason for caution. If Julian discovered the recording, he might try to destroy it.

I asked whether she could help me contact Dr. Cho.

Evelyn agreed.

Before leaving, she placed a small card on my bedside table. It contained a telephone number and a name I did not recognize. She told me not to call it unless she was present or another trusted medical professional had confirmed the arrangement.

“Your father believed that the most dangerous moment would be when you were too weak to insist on your own decisions,” she said. “Don't give anyone that opportunity.”

She unlocked the door and returned to the corridor.

I lay back against the pillow, trying to organize what I had learned.

The recorder might contain evidence against Julian. My father had suspected something. A mysterious grandson might exist. And the doctor who had declared me close to death seemed determined to keep every other physician away from my treatment.

Yet I still had no proof that my illness had been deliberately caused.

I needed evidence, and I needed time.

The following morning, Julian returned earlier than expected.

He brought coffee for himself, a fresh shirt for me, and another folder of documents. His expression was cheerful enough to make me wonder whether he had spent the night celebrating.

“Good news,” he said. “The lawyers have simplified everything.”

He set the folder beside my bed.

I did not touch it.

“What happened to the documents yesterday?”

“They're still waiting for your signature.”

“Then they can continue waiting.”

His smile faded.

“Clara, this is important.”

“Important to whom?”

“To both of us. I need authority to manage the estate while you're unable to do it yourself.”

“You said you were already managing it.”

“I am, but there are limits.”

“Then explain the limits.”

He exhaled slowly and opened the folder.

The first pages contained familiar legal language. The final page granted temporary authority over a broad range of financial and property matters. It was more extensive than he had suggested the previous day.

I turned the page toward him.

“This says you can authorize transfers involving my accounts.”

“Within the scope of the estate.”

“And this section allows you to appoint agents.”

“That's standard.”

“Would Victoria be one of those agents?”

His jaw tightened.

“Why are you bringing her into this?”

“Because she was here yesterday.”

“She understands property management.”

“Does she understand my finances?”

“She understands the work.”

I looked at him.

“I'm not signing.”

He closed the folder with a sharp movement.

“You don't understand how much trouble you're creating.”

“I'm dying, Julian. What trouble could I possibly create?”

The question stopped him.

For the first time, I saw anger without the protective layer of concern. It appeared briefly in his eyes before he looked away and regained control.

“You're making an already difficult situation impossible,” he said.

He reached into his jacket and produced a pen.

I pushed it away.

“No.”

He stared at me as though the word were an insult.

“You need to think carefully about what you're doing.”

“I am.”

He leaned toward the bed, lowering his voice.

“You may not have the luxury of changing your mind later.”

The threat was unmistakable.

Before I could answer, a hospital orderly appeared with instructions for another examination. Dr. Cho had arranged it before Julian arrived, and this time he could not prevent the procedure without openly challenging the hospital staff.

He followed the orderly into the corridor, arguing that my treatment plan should not be changed.

I was taken downstairs.

The examination itself was exhausting. The staff drew blood, reviewed the medication chart, and asked me to describe the supplements I had consumed at home. Dr. Cho told me that the results would take time and that she would not promise an outcome before she had enough evidence.

When I returned to my room, Dr. Vance was waiting.

He held my chart against his chest.

“Dr. Cho has exceeded her authority,” he said. “I have canceled her additional orders.”

“Can she do that?”

“She has no reason to interfere with my treatment.”

“Then why are you so concerned about what she might find?”

His expression hardened.

“You are seriously ill, Clara. You need to stop allowing fear to cloud your judgment.”

He left before I could ask another question.

Julian entered moments later.

He sat down and took my hand, but I no longer felt comforted by his touch.

“Have you spoken with anyone about me?” he asked.

I kept my expression blank.

“What do you mean?”

“People have been asking questions. The hospital staff are suddenly behaving as though I'm some kind of criminal.”

“Perhaps they are simply listening to me.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“You're not thinking clearly.”

“Then you shouldn't be worried about what I say.”

He released my hand.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. The monitor beside the bed continued its steady rhythm, recording the evidence of a body that was still alive despite the certainty with which he discussed its end.

Then he stood.

“I'll come back when you're ready to be reasonable.”

He walked out without taking the folder.

I watched the door close and waited until his footsteps faded.

When Evelyn returned later that evening, I told her everything about the attempted signature and the argument over Dr. Cho's examination. She listened carefully, then checked the corridor before drawing the curtain.

“Did he suspect anything?” she asked.

“I don't know. But he asked whether I'd been talking about him.”

Evelyn's expression grew grave.

“Then we have less time than I hoped.”

She placed the recorder on the table and showed me that the files had been preserved. She would not play the entire contents yet, explaining that some recordings needed to be examined alongside the medical and financial records.

“But there is something you should hear,” she said.

She selected a file and pressed play.

Julian's voice filled the quiet room.

“By next week, none of that will be a problem anymore.”

I closed my eyes.

I heard Dr. Vance question whether the documents had been signed. I heard Julian insist that they would be. I heard a discussion about the herbal tonic, the hospital's medication records, and the possibility of moving me to a private ward where fewer people would have access to my room.

Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.

“If she refuses to sign, she'll simply become less alert.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, I could not speak.

My husband had not merely anticipated my death. He and the doctor had discussed what to do if I resisted the transfer of control over my estate.

I opened my eyes and looked at Evelyn.

“Now will you tell me about the grandson?”

She nodded slowly.

“Yes. But you must understand that the truth may change more than your marriage.”

She reached into her bag and removed the photograph I had found in the envelope, placing it beside the recorder.

“The child your father was protecting,” she said, “is connected to the reason Julian wanted those land records.”

I stared at the photograph.

For the first time, I understood that my father's warning had never been only about money.

Someone else was caught in the middle of this, someone whose existence could expose the truth about my husband's plans.

And if Julian discovered that I knew about the child, the next conversation we had might be far more dangerous than the last.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Photograph My Father Kept Hidden Led Me to a Child Whose Existence Could Destroy Julian’s Carefully Constructed Future

For several seconds, I was certain that the medication had finally overwhelmed my mind. “My grandson?” I repeated.
