She listened, asked several questions, and then requested that the caller send the original records through the established legal channel. When she hung up, she remained still for several seconds.

“What happened?” I asked.

“The estate accountant has located another transaction. A substantial payment was made from one of the property companies into an account that does not appear on the ordinary estate statements.”

“Who owns it?”

“The bank records identify a company registered through an intermediary. We need further information to establish who controlled it.”

“Could it belong to Julian?”

“It could be connected to his business, but I won't make that conclusion until the records support it.”

I understood her caution, but the pattern was becoming impossible to ignore. Money had disappeared from the estate, signatures had been questioned, and my husband had repeatedly attempted to obtain broader authority over the remaining assets.

“What does the land account have to do with Daniel?” I asked.

Helen opened a separate file.

“Your father established a restricted arrangement to provide for the boy. The records suggest that he wanted those funds kept separate from the rest of the estate. There may have been an attempt to alter the account's instructions, but we haven't yet established whether any money was taken from it.”

Evelyn sat beside the window, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“Margaret told me Arthur was afraid Julian would discover the arrangement,” she said. “He believed that if Julian understood who the child was and how the money was protected, he might try to use the boy to gain leverage over the family.”

I looked at her.

“Did Julian ever threaten Margaret?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“She told me that he had pressured her to sign a statement denying his paternity. He claimed that acknowledging the child would ruin his professional reputation. She refused.”

“Did she tell my father?”

“Yes. That's when Arthur became convinced the matter involved more than an affair.”

The thought filled me with anger. Julian had not only abandoned a child; he had apparently tried to make the mother deny the truth. And if he was now seeking access to the account established for Daniel, his interest in the estate had a crueler dimension than I had imagined.

I asked Evelyn whether I could speak to the family caring for the boy.

“Not yet,” she said. “We must first make sure they know how to respond if Julian contacts them. Helen is arranging the necessary legal protections.”

I disliked being told to wait, but I could not deny that exposing Daniel's identity prematurely might make him vulnerable. I had spent years believing Julian was the person I could trust most. I would not make the same mistake with a child whose safety depended on careful decisions.

Shortly after noon, Dr. Cho came to review my condition.

She had received additional laboratory findings, although several tests remained incomplete. The results did not establish a single definitive cause for all my symptoms, but they suggested that the original prognosis had been made without adequately investigating certain possible contributors.

“I want to be very clear,” she said. “We have not proven that anyone deliberately caused your illness. However, the available evidence does not justify treating the original seven-day prediction as certain.”

I stared at her.

“Are you saying I might not die?”

“I'm saying we need to investigate before accepting that conclusion. We are reviewing your medications, evaluating possible toxic exposures, and repeating some tests. Your condition is serious, but there is enough uncertainty that I will not give you a fixed timeline.”

The room blurred as tears filled my eyes.

For days, I had imagined the end of my life as a narrow corridor closing around me. I had counted the hours in medication schedules and the minutes between visits, wondering whether each conversation would be my last.

Now a door had opened, though I did not know what lay beyond it.

Dr. Cho explained that I would remain under close observation while the investigation continued. She also asked that no outside supplements or drinks be given to me without staff approval.

I agreed.

When she left, Evelyn took my hand.

“You have to hold on to that uncertainty,” she said. “Not because we can promise you everything will be fine, but because no one has the right to declare the story finished before the facts are known.”

I squeezed her fingers.

For the first time, I allowed myself to imagine surviving.

Julian arrived that afternoon with Victoria.

He seemed to have rehearsed his expression in the car. He greeted me with a kiss on the forehead and placed a small gift bag beside the bed.

“I brought you something comfortable to wear when you come home.”

“I don't know when I'll be coming home.”

“Soon, I hope.”

Victoria remained near the window, looking everywhere except directly at me.

Julian opened his folder.

“The lawyers have prepared a simpler authorization. It only covers urgent property matters. We can complete it in a few minutes.”

I looked at Helen, who had returned shortly before their arrival. She sat quietly beside the bed, her briefcase closed.

“Who is this?” Julian asked.

“My solicitor.”

His smile disappeared.

“Why do you need a solicitor?”

“Because you keep asking me to sign documents I haven't been allowed to examine properly.”

He glanced at the folder in Helen's lap.

“Clara, this is a family matter.”

“My estate is not a family secret.”

Victoria shifted her weight.

Julian placed the papers on the tray table and turned to Helen.

“I'm her husband. I have been managing these affairs for years.”

“And my client has instructed me to review the documents before she signs anything,” Helen replied.

Julian laughed once, without humor.

“She's seriously ill. She doesn't need strangers complicating her life.”

“She has the right to independent advice.”

He looked at me, and I saw the anger he had been struggling to conceal.

“You've changed.”

“No,” I said. “I've started asking questions.”

His face reddened. He snatched the papers from the table and pushed them into his folder.

“Fine. Take all the time you want. But don't come crying to me when the properties fall into trouble.”

He turned toward the door.

Victoria followed him, but before leaving she looked back at me. There was fear in her expression, and beneath it something that resembled shame.

I wondered whether she knew about the illness, the financial transactions, or the child. Perhaps she had accepted Julian's version of events because it was convenient. Perhaps she had begun to understand that the future he promised her rested on a foundation that could collapse.

I did not ask.

After they left, Helen told me she had recorded the attempted signing in her notes and would send a formal notice to the estate's advisers confirming that no new authority should be accepted without independent verification.

She also arranged for an accountant to trace the transactions through the relevant companies and banks.

That evening, the hospital called an urgent meeting about my care.

Dr. Vance had filed a complaint alleging that Dr. Cho's intervention had disrupted my treatment and caused unnecessary confusion. The hospital administrator asked whether I wanted to respond formally.

“Yes,” I said. “I want every medical decision documented, and I want to know why my records contain inconsistencies.”

The administrator promised a review.

Dr. Vance did not attend the meeting. He had been removed from direct responsibility for my treatment pending the initial assessment of the records.

The news should have reassured me, but instead it made me nervous. If he had been involved in anything improper, he now knew that the hospital was examining his decisions.

Helen asked whether the recording included any reference to my medication.

Evelyn checked the file list and found a longer segment that had not yet been played. The audio was faint, and some words were difficult to distinguish, but a conversation between Julian and Dr. Vance could be heard discussing the importance of maintaining the existing prognosis.

Then Julian said, “She doesn't need to understand every detail. Once the transfer is completed, there won't be anything left for her to challenge.”

Dr. Vance replied, “If she improves, we will have a problem.”

Julian's answer was chillingly calm.

“She won't improve.”

Helen stopped the recording.

“We need the entire file examined,” she said. “This is potentially important, but the audio must be authenticated, and the meaning of each statement needs to be established in context.”

I stared at the recorder.

“Can we take this to the police?”

“Yes. Given the seriousness of the statements and the medical concerns, we should seek advice from the appropriate authorities without delay.”

Helen made the necessary calls. She did not promise that an arrest would follow or that the recording alone would settle the case. She explained that investigators would need to examine the medical records, financial documents, and circumstances surrounding the recording.

Before the evening ended, the hospital had confirmed that my medication records would be preserved and that no visitor could administer anything to me without authorization from the medical team.

Julian received notice that his request for unrestricted access to my records had been denied.

He responded with a message.

You have no idea what you're doing. You're putting everything at risk.

I showed it to Helen.

“Save it,” she said.

Then my phone rang again, this time from an unfamiliar number.

I answered cautiously.

A man introduced himself as a representative of the family currently caring for Daniel. He explained that someone had contacted them earlier that day, asking questions about the boy's school and the arrangements for his care.

“Who contacted you?” I asked.

“He didn't give his full name, but he said he was a relative. He wanted to know whether Daniel had inherited any money.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you tell him anything?”

“No. Evelyn warned us that we should not discuss the boy's circumstances with strangers. We thought you needed to know.”

I thanked him and ended the call.

Helen immediately contacted the lawyer handling Daniel's arrangements. Evelyn stood beside the bed, her face pale.

Julian had learned that the investigation was moving beyond the estate.

Now he was looking for the child.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When Julian Went Looking for the Boy He Had Denied, I Discovered the One Piece of Evidence My Father Had Never Trusted Anyone to Reveal

The next morning began with a telephone call that changed the direction of the investigation.
