He said he wanted to resolve the financial issues privately and avoid further conflict. Dana advised Chloe that she was under no obligation to meet him alone and suggested that any discussion take place with legal representatives present.

Chloe hesitated before agreeing.

“I don't want to hear another speech about how I misunderstood him,” she told me. “But I do want to see whether he can answer a direct question without blaming me.”

“Then decide what you want to ask before you go,” I said. “And remember that you can end the meeting if it becomes unproductive.”

She prepared a short list. She wanted an explanation of the transfers, clarification of the account connected to the disputed authorization, and confirmation that relevant financial records would be preserved. She did not include questions about Jessica. Those questions mattered emotionally, but she knew the meeting was meant to address the financial issues and that she would not find peace by allowing Marcus to shift every subject into an argument about the marriage.

The meeting took place in Dana's conference room on a gray Thursday afternoon. I drove Chloe there but waited outside. She had chosen to attend with Dana and another adviser present, so there would be a record of the discussion and no opportunity for either side to misrepresent what had been said.

Marcus arrived ten minutes late. When Chloe saw him enter, she stiffened. He wore a navy suit and carried a leather folder. He looked well rested, his hair neatly combed, his expression composed. For a moment, he looked like the man who had once helped her choose a dining table and spent entire weekends assembling furniture in their first apartment.

Then he glanced at her and said, “I hope you're ready to be reasonable.”

Chloe's fingers tightened around her notebook.

Dana intervened before the remark could turn into an argument. She reminded everyone that the meeting was limited to the outstanding financial questions and that each person would have time to speak without interruption.

Marcus began with a general explanation. He said he had been moving funds among investment accounts to take advantage of opportunities, and that some transactions had been temporary. He described the arrangement as ordinary for someone managing a portfolio and said he had not expected Chloe to question every movement.

Dana asked him to identify the accounts involved and provide supporting statements.

He opened his folder, removed several pages, and pointed to a transfer that had been moved back into the joint account after a short period. That transaction did appear consistent with his explanation. The next one, however, had no corresponding return payment in the records available to Chloe.

“What happened to this amount?” Dana asked.

“It went toward a business expense.”

“Which business?”

Marcus named the entity listed in the documents.

“What was the expense for?”

He looked down at the page. “I don't have every invoice with me.”

“Can you provide them?”

“Yes.”

Dana wrote that down and moved to the next transaction. Marcus's explanations became less specific as the questions continued. He referred to administrative costs, short-term opportunities, and arrangements he said had been discussed informally. When asked for dates or documents supporting those descriptions, he often promised to provide them later.

Chloe remained quiet until Dana turned to the disputed authorization.

Marcus's expression changed.

“That document was part of the account setup,” he said. “Chloe knew about the investment arrangement.”

“I knew we were saving for retirement,” Chloe replied. “I didn't know about this account.”

“You were aware I managed the investments.”

“That isn't the same as authorizing this transaction.”

He leaned back in his chair. “You're acting as if I forged your name.”

“I haven't accused you of that. I said I don't recognize the signature, and I want the institution's records to establish how the authorization was completed.”

For the first time, he seemed unable to answer immediately. He glanced at his attorney, who advised him to provide the supporting documentation through counsel.

Dana agreed that this was the appropriate next step. She also confirmed that the existing records should be preserved and that neither party should alter or delete relevant communications.

The meeting continued for another forty minutes. Several transactions were explained, but the larger questions remained unresolved. Marcus said he had acted in the belief that he was protecting their financial future. Chloe asked why he had not discussed the arrangements with her. He replied that she had never shown much interest in investment details.

“I asked you about our savings,” Chloe said. “You told me everything was fine.”

“You didn't ask for a full audit.”

“I didn't know I needed one.”

The room went quiet.

Marcus looked at her as if she had insulted him. “So now I'm supposed to be a criminal because I made decisions you didn't understand?”

“No,” Chloe said. “You're supposed to explain the decisions you made with money that was partly mine.”

Dana ended that part of the discussion and summarized the outstanding requests. Marcus agreed to provide additional records through his attorney. He did not admit wrongdoing, and no final determination was made about the disputed authorization or the unexplained expenses.

When the meeting ended, Chloe gathered her notebook and walked out without looking back. I was waiting near the reception desk.

“How was it?” I asked.

“Less useful than I hoped. More useful than I feared.”

We drove to a small café nearby. She ordered tea and sat with both hands wrapped around the cup.

“He can explain some of it,” she said. “But every time I ask about the part he can't explain, he tells me I'm attacking him.”

“Did he answer your questions?”

“Some. Not the important ones.”

She opened her notebook and reviewed what she had written. Her handwriting was steady, even where the questions had clearly upset her.

“I used to think that if I stayed calm enough, he'd eventually listen,” she said. “I thought maybe I could find the right words and make him understand why something hurt me.”

“You can communicate clearly without controlling whether another person listens.”

She looked at me. “That's difficult to accept.”

“Yes.”

After we left the café, Chloe asked me to stop at a pharmacy. She bought a few ordinary items, then walked slowly along the shops before returning to the car. It was the first time she had spent an afternoon outside without checking her phone every few minutes.

That evening, Marcus sent a message saying he hoped the meeting had shown Chloe that he was willing to cooperate. He also asked whether she would consider meeting him privately to discuss the future of their marriage.

Chloe showed me the message.

“Do you think he wants to reconcile?”

“I can't know what he wants. He may want to repair the marriage, reduce the conflict, protect his finances, or some combination of those things. You will need to judge his actions over time.”

She read the message again.

“He didn't apologize for leaving me at the station.”

“No.”

“He didn't ask how I was.”

“No.”

She placed the phone down.

“Then I'm not ready to meet him privately.”

She told Dana that any further discussions should remain through counsel until the outstanding issues had been clarified. Dana supported the decision and reminded her that the choice about reconciliation did not need to be made before the financial and safety concerns were addressed.

A few days later, Marcus's attorney provided additional account statements. Some transactions now had supporting invoices. Others still did not. The documents also clarified that the unfamiliar account had been used for a mix of investment-related movements and expenses that appeared personal. The records did not yet establish whether any transaction had been unauthorized, but they provided a more detailed picture of how the money had moved.

One expense stood out. It had been paid from the account shortly before the Thanksgiving confrontation and was connected to a reservation for two people. The date matched a period when Marcus had told Chloe he was working late.

Chloe stared at the record.

“I don't need him to explain what this was,” she said quietly. “I know enough about the timing.”

I sat beside her.

“It's understandable that you see a connection. Dana can determine whether the transaction is relevant to the financial accounting. You don't need to decide every personal question from a single charge.”

She nodded, then saved the document.

The next afternoon, Rebecca called. She had spoken with Marcus and learned that he was considering moving out of the house for a while. She said he was angry that Chloe had involved attorneys and believed the family could have resolved everything privately.

“Did he say anything about the money?” Chloe asked.

“He says the accounts are his responsibility and that he was handling things for both of you. He says you never cared about the details until now.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“That's not the same as saying he explained them.”

“I know,” Rebecca replied. “I asked him why he didn't simply show you the statements. He said you wouldn't understand.”

Chloe was silent for a moment.

“Did he tell you about the night he took me to the station?”

“He said you wanted to leave.”

“Did he tell you he took my coat and left me outside?”

Rebecca's voice faltered. “No.”

“Did he tell you about the footage?”

“No.”

Chloe took a breath. “I'm not asking you to fight with him. But I can't keep being described as unreasonable whenever I ask for the truth.”

“I understand.”

After the call, Chloe sat with the notebook in her lap.

“Maybe he really believes he's the reasonable one,” she said.

“People can believe their own explanations and still avoid facts that make them uncomfortable.”

She considered that. “So I shouldn't expect him to admit everything.”

“You should expect the process to establish what it can. His personal admission is a separate matter.”

For several days, there was no direct contact from Marcus. Chloe continued working and began viewing apartments closer to her office. She found one with a small balcony, a reliable heating system, and enough room for her books and drafting table. The rent was higher than she would have preferred, but she could afford it on her own salary.

She asked Dana to review the practical implications before signing a lease. When Dana confirmed that the arrangement was reasonable, Chloe paid the deposit and received the keys.

The apartment was nearly empty. The first evening, she sat on the floor with takeout food and a lamp plugged into an extension cord. There were no framed photographs, no familiar dishes, and no sound of someone else moving through the rooms. Yet she told me she felt something she had not felt since Thanksgiving.

“It's quiet,” she said over the phone. “But it's my quiet.”

I smiled, though she could not see me.

“Then let yourself enjoy it.”

She laughed softly. “I thought you would tell me to buy a proper table.”

“I will tell you that eventually.”

For the first time, she laughed without the sound breaking in the middle.

But the relief did not last unchallenged. The next morning, Dana called to say that Marcus's representative had asked for additional time to provide the records associated with the disputed authorization. The institution had not yet completed its review, and no conclusion had been reached.

Chloe listened carefully, then asked what would happen if the explanation never came.

“Then we'll work with the evidence available and pursue the appropriate remedies,” Dana replied. “We won't assume a conclusion simply because the process takes time.”

After the call, Chloe looked around her new apartment. Her suitcase lay open beside the wall, and a small stack of unopened mail rested on the kitchen counter.

“I wanted to get away from him,” she said. “I didn't expect that I would have to learn so much about my own finances at the same time.”

“You are learning it now,” I told her. “And the knowledge will belong to you, regardless of what Marcus does next.”

She looked toward the window. Below, people moved along the sidewalk carrying groceries and bags from the shops. Her life was no longer arranged around Marcus's schedule, his explanations, or his family's expectations. It was uncertain, but it was beginning to take a shape of its own.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Evidence That Finally Reached Chloe Forced Everyone to Reconsider What Had Happened Before Thanksgiving

Marcus requested a meeting through his attorney the following week.
